I was wondering what anyone thought of the domain Whaleslide.com for a search engine? I know it's pretty random but so was 'Dogpile'. I'm hoping that in randomness makes it more memorable.

Other options I have that are .com are

Minitol.com
Flashdrag.com

Pretty limited. I know.

All opinions welcome, also if you have any decent search related domains must be .com going let me know it can be abstract like a random word.

Thanks for your help.

I am sure you can find something much better than what you have listed.

If you prefer randomness then go with either whaleslide or flashdrag, Minitol sounds like a prescription medication.

If you're serious about starting a search engine, spend some more money and buy a name off of someone. You're not going to reg something that's good enough. Even if you're REALLY good at finding quality available domains, that would be too tall of an order. Learn a lesson from Cuil - the name matters, a lot.

Thanks for your comments. I am in the process of trying to source a decent domain. I do remember Cuil the company that managed to raise $33 million dollars in VC and forgot that they needed people use the site for it to succeed. What a disaster.

I actually think Whaleslide.com could work as long as you're not aiming for the stars. Modest success, maybe.

I picture a nice logo with whale tail icon and some sort of tag line like... "Huge results without the blubber!"

Corny, I know, but again if you're not shooting extremely high, folks might dig it.

The "blubber" factor reminds me of a concept I'd like to see some day... the ability for users to flag search engine results as "unrelated" to the search terms entered.

Sick of Googling something and getting a ton of sites unrelated to the search terms.

I'm not aiming to rival Ask or Yahoo or anything ridiculous like that. I'd like 50,000 user after a year. With regards to filtering out sites, I'll look into it I know exactly what you mean.
:-D

LMAO!!! Well put...

If anyones wondering why 'TOL' is included so often its an abbreviation for 'Think out loud'

Though I am very familiar with "Think out loud", I've never heard the acronym "TOL" used before. Is it a new (or even old) buzzword/expression? Or is it something you are "creating" to use as part of your overall brand identity?

Good luck with your endeavor!

I believe the acronym "TOL" is quite old, I was looking to encompass it into the brand identity although whether it would work or not i'm still unsure.

Worst case scenario 'TOL' is also an acronym for Tower of London I'll just say I was searching for its location. :-D

Thanks for your support.

Any more information about the engine itself? I am intrigued.

Sadly the engine itself is power by a choice of either google, yahoo, bing or ask. The site has a couple of extremely unique features not yet found in main stream search engines. So hopefully I can use these to differentiate myself. I'm not looking to challenge anyone
but even and tiny percentage of the search engine pie is enough.

The feedback I've had for about 200 people is go for Whaleslide because its so unique.

Thanks for the additional info. Yes, WhaleSlide sounds good to me also. If you want to look at a competitive search engine domain name, take a look at DuckDuckGO. The person who developed this search engine is a successful entrepreneur and pretty much a one man show. Good luck!

I'm not typing whaleslide.com into my browser if I want to search for something, even if the features are unique. Find something shorter. I usually hate Godaddy Auctions, but they are perfect for finding cheap brandable 5L names. For instance, you can grab jugby.com for $9 on closeout right now. It looks and sounds like rugby, so it's easy to pronounce and spell. It may not be what you're looking for, but there are a ton of decent 5L names on there.

Thanks for that info I took a look at the site, and the name has similar qualities to mine it's strange but memorable.

I agree in an ideal world the name would be shorter, and I am keeping my ear to the ground just in case something I 'really' like comes along. However I wouldn't want you to type Whaleslide.com too many times into your browser as i'd like you to have it as your homepage & in your favourites. :)

Don't fret too much about the lenghth of the domain name.

People don't mind hammering out "Wikipedia.com", and conversely I don't think certain short domains are very memorable or easy to recall the spelling of. You have to catch something very good like "Google", not just anything like "Wertlze" or something.

(Sidenote... "Huge Results. No Blubber." after thinking it over... just because I have nothing better to do. Heh.)

The domain should be old and has nice content, linking and backlinking, etc.
Try to find the best domain as there are so many options available.

How will you be running the search engine? How would you gain revenue, run ads or ppc ads?

Does anyone know a way to create a search engine? Would it be hard to do or very hard?

I have a domain I can use which is PR4 & about 4 or 5 years old but I've tried to get feedback from potential users and just over 85% of 500 samples say Whaleslide is the most memorable & unique.

The engine will make revenue initially through Adsense which you can run through search.

With regards to actually creating a search engine I think you need some pretty clever people and a huge amount of capital to even come close to any of the front runners. However a 0.1% share of the US & UK markets would make you extremely wealthy.
