Open Source...how open, exactly?

I've been trying out some open source. Most softwares allow you to completely modify the softwares. Does that include modifying the copyright information at the footer?

Under the license that the script is released, most say that you should leave the copyright intact.

Some will just ask you to keep it, but you don't have to.
It's best to check the license that the script is released under.
