Drupal or Joomla?

It's come down to these two open source softwares. I have absolutely no Drupal experience, and I've only tried a Joomla demo but that was a few years ago. I don't have time to get into testing them right now so maybe anyone in here have tested both softwares and can tell me which one you prefer? Thanks! :)

my preference is joomla... i have tried both and like joomla, but thats mostly because I've spent more time on it..

what are you planning to use the CMS for? Joomla has a lot of extensions where if what you need the extension has been built then its a lot easier making your site...

drupal i hear is better for a blogging platform i believe?

Hi,

I tried out both and didn't like either. Too confusing, and too much work for me. What type of site are you trying to develop? I always come back to Wordpress for opensource.

Don't touch drupal with a ten footer unless you're a coder. Stay with joomla...stay safe. :>

I use drupal and I am not a programmer. I am actually learning PHP using by using drupal. I have tried Joomla several times, and have always gone back to drupal (80% of my sites are made in drupal, the other 20% is Wordpress). I have also tried Wordpress, and have only good things to say about it.

The pros of drupal:
- Cleaner, most available modules are completely free, no strings attached.
- Very stable, and very well thought
- A very large amount of modules that you can combine to make many different types of sites, more flexibility
- Use this if you want to make a site that you will develop over time... if you are going to stay with your site and develop it, then Drupal is your choice

The pros of Joomla:
- Easier to theme
- Better response as far as support from other members
- If you want to develop something that looks cool, and has functionality off the bat, then use Joomla

The pros of Wordpress:
- Easier to work with, stable
- Many modules
- More themes available
- Use wordpress if your site is going to be mainly a blogging site

Of course, this is my own point of view.

joomla has more users and has won more awards, but i personally prefer drupal as i find it much cleaner. both are well supported by their respective communities so you might as well go with the cleaner one.

if you're not that technically-minded, try to stick with wordpress if possible. joomla/drupal are harder to "understand", but then again they're more powerful too.

Thanks for the replies. :) For those who wanted to know what I intend to do with the site: I want to start a sort of portal site.

Yes dupal is cleaner IMHO but in terms of support you'll get a faster response from joomla...

IMO, if you only want to make a website about blog, simple story, tutorial, or such, use Drupal.

You can use Joomla for more "complex" situation (e.g shopping cart, etc).

Btw, i don't really know about portal. :)

i just got done with my site built on Joomla - www.intelbank.com

I looked at drupal as well, but due to the enormous amount of modules available for joomla, i went with it and after a pretty intense learning curve have it finally figured out.
If you can understand the concept of module positions and you get a template where the module positions are actually explained, joomla is a cake walk.

I prefer joomla.
You get a lot of plugins for it.

Personally I love Drupal, and built a few sites with it. I'm not a coder.

 c'mon now. It's not all that difficult. The following is heavily over used, but in all seriousness, if i can do it, a blind monkey with half a brain can do it, which means you can probably do it while you're writing a financial dossier. :)
