Has anyone thought of printing out stickers and sticking them in public places?

Stop looking at what people with access to unlimited promotional funds are doing and talk about yourself.

When was the last time any of us spent $1mm on an ad campaign for a website?

How many websites do you own?

What are the ad budgets?

I'm going to clarify this once more, then I'm done - dollar for dollar you'll get a better ROI and reach with online advertising for a web only offering.

You can hand out stickers / business cards and what not, you'll never get the immediacy of someone who 'wants to buy at that time, at your website via those.

I own around 40+ websites..... I do offline marketing for 5 of them right now which includes the following:

Distribution of:
Stickers
Flyers
Silicone Wristbands
Napkins - I pay bars/clubs to use my napkins

In addition to those methods I also have two people a month holding signs that advertise my websites.

In the last three months I have spent over a thousand dollars on offline advertising alone and the results are good.... I constantly get feedback from visitors to my sites that say they came because they got one of my promo items or one of their friends got a promo item and told them about it.

In addition to offline I also spend money on online advertising I prefer CPM advertising because my websites get more brand exposure for the buck.

If you have a minisite or a blog or similar sites and the purpose is to make money through Google AdSense, affiliate links and similar programs, then you do not need to do any kind of offline marketing. Just carry on with your good SEO work, dodging search engines' bots and thus ensuring a constant flow of traffic to your site.

However, if you have some serious online business, regardless of online or offline offerings, you simply cannot afford avoiding offline marketing. GoDaddy can afford millions ($) and therefore they spend millions. I have been involved in a project lately and our services are purely online. Still we have to advertise ourselves in different magazines, newspapers in different regions of the world. I have just booked lanyards in an exhibition taking place in November. MWZD's claim is so big, which is simply not comprehensible and reflects on his lack of information in this field.

PS. There are two websites; I am really sick and tired of seeing them all the time on tv here in the UK, i.e. confused.com and eharmony.com. Both of them offer online services and still they rely on offline marketing strategies. MWZD can argue that they spend because they can afford!

Jawed, aren't you the guy who was also totally into .asia when it launched? Or was it .me? How's that working out for you?

I don't really want / need to prove to you what I do know or don't, you are entitled to your opinion, whatever that may be, I'm sure in my knowledge.

Guess confused.com got its perfect target audience with you looking at the ads offline.

I had quite a few .asia names and flipped some of them long time ago when the .asia market was still hot and recovered my small investment in it (total $372). I let the rest of them expire, as no one was interested in them. But why are you bringing .asia issue here? On a daily basis I buy and sell names, sometimes I make money and sometime I don't. Try to stay on the topic, mate! :)

Oh, you have edited your post! Now you have included .me. Dot me is doing fine and the proof is that once I won an auction of .me names and you lost it and in your pm to me you wanted to buy the lot from me.:santa:

Gotta laugh at the idea that offline advertising doesn't work for websites! LOL

I just did a mass mailing to 5000 local businesses and got 700 sign-ups. One single page flyer and it worked like a charm.

The one thing I will say tho, sometimes it's hard to measure the traffic that comes from offline advertising, especially if you have more than one thing going at once.

Easy solution to that - create a special page for your promotions that are linked from nowhere else and use noindex in the <head>. ex - blahblah.com/specialdeal. The odd person will just go to the root url and not be counted but it works all the same.
