The new top-level domain .nyc is due to be launched sometime in 2014. Uniteddomains.com is offering a pre-registration program for this and other domains.

I did pre-register some .nyc domains, and I realized that most meaningful one-word domains were already grabbed. So it seems like there is a demand, and many people are participating in the pre-registration program.

What do you guys think? Does pre-registration have any meaning? if I can pre-register a domain like think.nyc, should I spend my time on it?

Hi Websurfer, I am new here as well, and from your area it would seem. I too am closely eyeing the .nyc registrar situation. I do not think there is any weight in the pre-registrations. My point because i have successfully pre-registered the same 3 12+ letter names on 3 separated registrars that suggests to me they are merely hoping to have the largest list of pre-registrations to help them vie for participation as a registrar of that top level domain once the city of New Yorks' application is approved. But it does not cost anything to try, so why not, right?

Thanks Fogshat for your reply. Uniteddomains.com claims that in previous pre-registrations they had a %47 success rate. It is very hard to find available premium .nyc domains on United Domains.
I just tried pre-registration at my.101domain.com, and I was able to put in my shopping cart such domains as "newyork.nyc" and "green.nyc" - domains that were definitely pre-registered. This does not look legit to me.

It's completely worthless to "pre-register" domains with these registars and the new extensions.

It's only a ploy to get you involved in the feeding frenzy auction that will take place with all the "pre-ordered" names.

It's a marketing strategy by the registars that have equity in all the new "tld's" coming out.

    Basically it's BULL$HIT.

lennco, are you trying to imply that I am an agent of United Domains, attempting to create hype...?
This cannot be further from the truth. Over the past few days I spent about 8 hours pre-registering .nyc domains at United Domains, and I'd simply like to hear that there is some value in the time I spent, and I want to know if I should continue with this pre-registering spree. (It takes a lot of time to find available premium domains.)

I was actually quite discouraged my .nj's claim that it is "BULL$HIT".

Can you explain a bit more how this works, and can you point to earlier precedents where this was the process? Is United Domains' %47 claim an utter lie?

Here is a quick article I just found basically stating what I would have said here:

    http://www.newgtldsite.com/new-tld-domain-registration/

    ;)

    Thanks, .NJ.
I think that this article explains in more detail:

Can't post links since I am a new member. Remove "new-tld-domain-registration/" from the above URL and add "new-gtld-domain-pre-registration/".
