What are the consequences of not using your real name for whois info on your domains?
I see lots of domains with obvious fake contacts on them.(they are up to something bad!) Is that ok?
:)

No, it's not ok!

If there is an issue or if someone reports it you could lose the domain.

Anyone who needs to put a fake name should just use the Privacy Protection :imho:

I think so that its not good way.

We should use our original name because it would increase faith on us or our company.

Thanks :)

will ICANN have the right to delete your domain if they discover the domain contacts are blank? I see some domain with an entirely blank WHOIS :O

As per ICANN policy every domain owner has to keep REAL info in their whois. Even ICANN has issued warnings to registrars for compelling its customers to provide real names, addresses, emails and phone numbers. Just 2/3 months back a leading registrar lost its status because their thousands of customers had fake whois informations and use the domains for illegal activities and selling non-prescribed medicines.

Some registrars will remove your domain even if they find wrong telephone numbers or email addresses in your whois contact. (In event they call / email you and your mail bounces back).

I prefer to register with my real name, and keep that information up to date, but I also use Privacy Protection so only the proper officials can get my information.

You can use the whois private protection if you don't want to reveal your real name or personal data.

you should *definitely* put valid information on whois. or else, it can be a good way to loose a domain.

some years back it was a peace of cake sending a domain to drop because of that. there were some that used a simple technique that was sending many emails to the admin contact email box until it got full and emails start bouncing back and then submiting a complaint to Internic saying that the email in the whois was not working.

today is more dificult for that to happen but you can loose a domain if you abuse on the false info. i've seen domains with completly blank whois info. it's the farwest. registrars should monitor such basic things.

many domains have false whois info, *really* many. people don't want to spend money in whois protection and so they think that this is a good way... puting fake company names, or "domain admin" is not also correct. you can loose a domain by this way too.

At minimum, make sure the admin / registrant email address(es) shown is valid and functional.

Because when someone files a Whois Data Problem Report (and yes, there are people who grab registered domains that way; an obscure method that few know about), the registrar will typically only send an email notification requiring prompt action (most won't call nor snail mail) - if no response to the email, it's very possible the person will lose their domain; registrar lock, passwords, etc are no protection against WDPRs.

I've seen people doing this, but I'm sure it is not technically valid.

I always use my real name, no reason to hide. And if you don't want your name on the WhoIs, I would either get privacy or maybe form a DBA and use the company name and a P.O. Box.. I guess that would work too.

I agree.

Get a sole proprietor, file a DBA name, and use that.

Should be under $30.

Agreed, you can take it a step further with a po box and cell phone as well, hard to impersonate someone when you don't know their name or use Fabulous or one of the other guys that have free privacy whois included in the domain price.
