I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I have noticed that people with avatars usaually know more then people without avatars. The avatar itself have nothing to do with knoledge but the people who have them seem to know more then those who don't. But there are people with avatars that don't know what they are talking about and some people who are experts and don't have avatars, but this is the general.

Do I even have an avatar? If I did, it would probably be that dumb POTAT-OWNED avatar, now how smart would that make me look?

Well, it's most certainly not a general rule.
But my theory (well, one of them) is that, statistically speaking, people who bother to set up avatars or have a neatly laid out signature spend a lot of time on forums and therefore they both learn more and share more of their their knowledge.
People who have no avatar are not that bound to the community.
I didn't have an avatar for quite a while myself, but two months ago I decided to make namepros my homepage and just felt that something to differentiate me from the rest, something representative, was in order.

Please note: I said 'STATISTICALLY SPEAKING"

Can you please use better grammar next time? I think you're trying to say that people without avatars are dumb, I can't really make out what you're saying (maybe because I don't have an avatar).

No, I am saying that as a general people without avatars know less. There are exceptions, you know better then me but you don't have an avatar and I do. But as a general...

And also not that they are dumb, they know less about domains....

I'm really not trying to offend anyone, just making an observation.

Hmm

Hmm, I don't think I agree with that, but thank God I have an avatar eh? :P

I do think matrics has a point though..

People who have no avatar are not that bound to the community.

That makes sense to me.. but I don't think you can honestly judge who is more knowledgable based on the fact they like to show off a bit, with either a cool avatar or one promoting their company in some way.. maybe those with avatars just like to stand out a bit.. I think that's closer to being true than saying we're just smarter .. but what do I know..?

I never said it was a general rule... just from what I've been seeing around
BTW, there are forums that disallow avatars altogether (see WHT)

Fine how about this....

Take all the experts and all the noobs, what do the experts have that the noobs don't?

Longer memberships and more experience. So you'd figure that being here so much longer, the time they've have to add an avatar is a lot higher than people who have been here a few weeks or months. Maybe all the newbs are too busy trying to make good posts and learn about everything here instead of wasting their time with finding an avatar.

Okay but the experts don't have to learn because they already know, so they can add an avatar, confirming my point....

I think I have an avatar ...... but I have them disabled in the User CP so I can't see any. :p

Yeah you got an avatar. It's got a big q on it.

Interesting theory, but I wouldn't equate having an avatar to having knowledge. There's plenty of people with avatars that aren't as knowledgeable as others that choose not to use an avatar.

Cheers!

Avatar is an object for display purposes. I don't find it right to judge someone's knowledge by an object. The only way to judge someone's knowledge is from the way he share his ideas, the way he expressed them and also the reason he has this idea. There comes the "why, what, where, who and how?". Those who can answer these factors brilliantly, are consider knowledgable in my view. Stuff like signatures, avatars are just images, not truthful, IMHO.

CoolJeff.com doesn't have an avatar.

It really is a matter of how important the forum is to you. Someone that stops in monthly to see the latest and greatest sales/news etc really has no need for an avatar. Folks that do business here a few times per week, or even daily, want to leave an impression on others... therefore are more likely to have an avatar.

Having an avatar is almost like having a logo for your personality. You can actually tell a lot about a person by looking at their avatar.

Of course, there are always exceptions. I've dealt with people that use the forum on a daily basis and still don't use avatars. It all comes down to personal choice and personal appearance. How much do you want to be differentiated from the rest? Or, do you just want to blend in?

There's multiple factors to consider...unfortunately, it's not as cut and dry as the smart people have them, and the uneducated ones don't!
