I got vBulletin, have had it for years... Every forum I start goes nowhere. I can get the domain up to a PR 3 but the only people that seem to join are people that never post or stupid spammers.

I have mostly done "everything" forums because the only topics I am really into are webmaster/domainer/PPC stuff and theres already major forums for that type of topics.

Cant do adult because theres limited places to advertise it plus I couldnt use Google Adsense, Google Analytics, or VBSEO...

Not sure what to do, I would like to have vb forums, vb blog, vbseo, adsense set up like it is here at NP, ETC...

I wish someone would get the point/bank system as a real plugin too...

Just need a good subject...

Maybe it's time to move on ? I tried a couple of forums and decided there have to be better ways to make a few bucks. Between the trolls and spammers it seemed like a full time job for even a small forum.

John, I used to be where you were when it came to forums. I was great at creating them or running them from scratch, but when it came time to develop a loyal userbase, it simply didn't work. It's really difficult, if not impossible to start up a "general" forum today. It's best to somehow find or create a niche that doesn't have a "central" forum yet and take a leap from there.

Forums aren't attractive to a lot of people unless they're very active, putting forum startups in a very difficult position. You've got to offer something or give things away for people to sign up and stay captivated.

Or, as it was mentioned, switch over to a blog. You'll be writing more, but it's usually easier to find regular readers. Search engines love them, in most cases.

Bottom line: Move away from forums, offer incentives, or create a niche.

Unless your forum is offers something that is not available anywhere else, then it is really hard to build a following.

Don't build your site around a forum, let the forum become an expansion of your site.
There are of course exemptions to this.
