Nominet to police .uk domain names for illegal terms
Nominet has bowed to pressure and agreed to check all .uk domain names for graphic terms - despite its CEO arguing this amounted to censorship.
The registry organisation will automatically scan domain names for explicit terms that might "signal or encourage" sex crimes, such as rape.
It will then manually review any flagged terms and suspend or de-register any domain names that fall foul of the new policy.
Nominet said further details would follow in March, but hasn't detailed how it will draw up the list of explicit terms, whether a third party might provide that list, or when the system will go live.
