I'm sick of 20 official threads here in the name discussion thread.

The Official Abu Dhabi/Dubai Thread
The Official Biotech Thread
The Official Nanotech Thread
The Official Solar Energy Thread
The Official Alternative Energy/Green Thread
The Official LLLL.com Thread
Another Official LLLL.com Thread
The Official L-L-L.com Thread
The Official Macau Domains Thread

Sheesh guys...not every type of domain in the world deserves an official thread.

those are even worse.
I can understand the LLLL.coms, L-L-L.com threads
But biotech, solar energy, nanotech, abu dhabi, macau? how many people are actually regging those? not a lot (as opposed to LLLL.coms)

Thinking the same thing - really looks junky.

Problem is there is no way I know of to change the name of a thread once submitted. Maybe, if there is enough action on this, the "OFFICIAL NO MORE OFFICIAL THREADS THREAD" then the mods would be willing to do the changes - and at the same time tone down the capital letters.

"Official threads" = A way for individuals to pump up the type of domain they're hyping.

Well for one i like the Showcase threads.
They give u a fair idea of the kind of domains being registered adn also helps you find the people to contact for particular niche domains.
Valuable source to be referred to.

Totally agree with you Sashas, it's really getting riduculous with all these "Official" threads. I made a post about this yesterday in another one of these "official" threads: http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/398281-the-official-biotech-domain-name-thread.html

Maybe you should've called it the "Official Do Not Start Any More Official Thread"!

And also the Showcase Threads.

Does this mean that I can't start my "The Official Relativistic Many-Body Quantum Field Theory Thread"??? I really had my heart set on getting all the glory, fame, and attention associated with starting an official thread. :'(

As you might have guessed from some of my recent posts poking fun at official threads, I am joking here, and yes, it is getting a bit silly.

On a serious note, I refer to a lot of these threads (in private) as the "hype threads". Without pointing out particular threads or individuals (you can guess), some people may actually be getting hurt. Some new people may be more susceptible since they have not been around markets long enough. In the stock market, a lot of the tactics seen around here would be referred to as "pump and dump", which is not only unethical but illegal. The domain market has no such legal protection or SEC, but ethics are a "market invariant". The tactic is to get a reasonable strong position in a particular equity (domain category), then hype the h**l out of the equity (domain cat) to build scarcity and add value to their own position, and then sell. The people that come later buy in at a higher cost (or lower quality domains) that mainly benefit the person that started the hype.

Some of these domains are extremely valuable, but a lot of the stuff I see in the hype threads is just garbage, with people's dreams turning into nightmares as the mortgage comes due. In my 35+ years of investing I have seen a lot of market excess and abuse. Some people in the domain field appear to be studying the unethical market practices I have seen for decades... that or the other option may be they really believe their own $&D*% ...

Remember, there is always another good investment tomorrow. There is no rush. I just hate to see people get hurt, and while a lot of the people may do well, most new people in the markets get hurt when they rush in without thinking.

Here is a question: How many people around here have a balanced portfolio of stocks, commodities, real estate, domains, businesses, etc? Are you ready for a recession or a few years of bad times? Are you ready for $8 gas (or $5/whatever) like another member here brought up??? Do you watch the business news, and if so, what are your thoughts about eroding fundamentals in the market? How about technicals? Several months ago when we hit 14000 I saw the glassy eyed looks of the market analysts as they spoke about 15000. I sold, and the market tanked. I see this same glassy eyed speculation here in some domain areas. Are you ready for a recession/layoff, should that happen?

Anyway, good comments as usual Sasha, and rep added. I doubt much will change though, human nature being what it is.

I completely agree.
I believe many newbies come here and are swept by the huge hype. Some of it might be justified, but most of it is just built up, artificial. LLLL.com hype? Possibly justified, though I'm still skeptical; I believe we'll see quite a few drops by this time next year. L-L-L.com hype? These will stay, I believe.

But its the other 'Official' threads that bother me. Macau domains? That thread is running into 100's of posts. So many people regging Macau domains. Seriously folks. Its just one location. How many domains do you think it needs? How many of them will find buyers?

Then there are the Abu Dhabi, Dubai domains. Well, some of them are understandable and are valuable. DubaiRealty.com, or DubaiHomes.com - understandable. But newbies coming in, seeing all the Dubai hype, then regging DubaiBarberShops.biz, well thats just throwing money down the drain.

I find these threads quite like the .mobi cheerleading threads about any article even remotely related to mobile internet being passed off as proof of .mobi value.

Can we request the mods to limit these threads? Not only are they clutter, they're also harmful to so many newbies.

"Pump & Dump" .....you brought memories back with that term.

Yes it`s true and more or less it`s what everybody does in many kind of investments , whether it`s LLL.com ( why do I need one?) or LLLL.com or stocks.

We can see the same pattern in the realestate bubble worldwide.

But at the end of the day , the differences between a Pump & Dump of garbage and the Pump & Dump of real value is so minimal that the line can be crossed so easily.

At the end , what really matters is "did you gain or did you lose?" because as you certainly know, even Google could go bankruptcy and become the next rubbish stock (despite at the moment it`s unlikely).

lol i understand where you're all coming from - especially when the "official" threads have typos in the title and just look messy in general.

The Official "Complains" Thread

I vote for this thread to be made Sticky so hopefully in the future people won't make all these "Official" threads
