I always check to make sure the backlinks are still in place EVEN if the PR is showing valid. The PR could be valid since the PR snapshot date was several months ago but the links might have disappeared since than.

Aboutdomains, the best way I use to find out is simple
goto Google.com
type in, info:www.domain.com
hit search, and see if it returns anything

If it returns a different domain, or no domain at all, then you know it's fake. hope this helps in the future
