I saw a story last night on a boy that was hit by lightning when he was using an ipod while cutting the grass. He suffered severe burns where the ear buds were in his ears and where the cords went down the sides of his face. Both eardrums were ruptured, some bones in his ear were broken, etc.

There is much conjecture on whether or not the portable device attracted the lightning to him.

I thought so too...this will def. have some ramifications for apple, seeing as their hottest new product is an ipod/phone.

If not ipod or iphone, it would have been a cd player or a cassette player, or a radio..... can't blame an act of God on something like that. Moral of the story is don't be mowing the dang lawn if there is the potential for lightning.

It happened to be an ipod he was wearing at the time but any devices on him containing metal would have had the same result (walkman, discman).

Roguewriter beat me to it :)

well, we both know you're right rogue, but us domainers aren't your average joe down the street. Most will not realize it can happen with just about any portable. I for one didn't realize that portables could become a lightning rod-glad I do now.

rather than the iPod , it could have been the lawnmower.....bigger object with many metallic parts ....especially the engine.....then obviously the iPod added it to hit him in the ears.

Woah! He is now deaf in one ear and has no sense of equilibrium. I have to ask though, why the heck was he mowing the lawn when there was lightning present?

Hit it on the nail! Lets think outside the metaphorical box of the media here shall we, it wasn't the ipod that attracted the lightning...the idiot was holding onto a metal lawnmower.

The ipod may of acted as a conductor...and so what? People are far too eager to start blaming people now a days. If he was wearing a watch, bracelet or anything else it would have conducted.

Other people got killed by lightning when they weren't wearing ipods - therefore ipods prevent you from being killed by lightning

Anything is possible when you apply the kind of insane logic used by news reporters.
