Identifying domain registration trends and key statistics can help domainers make important investment decisions. To aid the process, we analyzed more than 4.6 million newly registered domains (NRDs) added between 1 and 28 February 2022 using WhoisXML API’s daily NRD Data Feeds. Our findings revealed the following:
- The same top-level domains (TLDs) that topped our January 2022 analysis made it to the top 10 list of TLDs for February 2022 NRDs.
- The .com TLD continued to lead in terms of TLD extension, albeit a four-point drop in registration volume.
- The commonly used terms could be categorized into generic tech, digital currency-related, and country-based terms.
Top TLDs Used by February 2022 NRDs
The .com TLD extension still held the top spot, although there was a slight drop in the number of domains using it. The TLD accounted for 59% of the total domain registration volume, down from 63% last month. Still, .com had a significant lead over the other TLDs, with .xyz and .cyou following in second and third places, accounting for only 7% and 4%, respectively.Another notable finding was that the top 10 TLDs for February were precisely the same as those for January, although their rankings changed. That means people were interested in the same TLDs for two months in a row. The chart below shows the top 10 TLDs for February 2022 NRDs.
Commonly Used Terms
We also analyzed the second-level domains of a sample of the NRDs to get a sense of the most popular terms. Five categories stood out, namely:- Generic tech: Text strings related to technology and the Internet continued to be prevalent. Some examples include “app,” “services,” “tech,” “solutions,” and “web.”
- E-commerce: In February, we saw some commonly used terms relevant to online shopping, including “amazon,” “shop,” “store,” and “fedex.”
- Country-based: We also noticed the use of country names and their two-letter country codes, such as “ukaccounts,” “rebates-uk-gov,” “petitetaille-suvs-fr,” and “wdofrance.” Additionally, thousands of new domains contained “ukraine.”
- Digital currency-related: Terms like “crypto,” “mint,” “ada,” “eth,” and “invest” remained prevalent.
- Communication: We also noted the repeated use of “email” and “discord” among the NRDs.

NRD Database Packages
