Great post. Thanks.

Its amazing to see .ai . I guess it must be easier these days to raise money if you call your software/programme AI.

Fashion such a lovely concept - keeps the economy busy....

I do think hand regging domains is cheap enough that in some cases like botworx, they should just get the .com also. so they are using botworx.ai and maybe grab botworxai.com catch anyone that might go there.

With the .com you would think. Though the old days of buying all variations are mostly over...

Nice one. However, the below companies already own the .com version of the domain name.
1) Nemaura Pharma
2) Adveez
3) HyperTrack
4) Termostore
5) Freshket

These companies, many are tech related to new areas and they are raising dough based on their tech not their name.

So they can call themselves whatever.tld, it doesn't matter since they're a low end startup which the numbers show.

None will brand themselves as those lame company names with the public so they don't need .com

Now IF any of these startups had a game plan showing the need to market to the public then only a fool would be dumping money into a marketing disaster, all you need to do is say O.com to any marketing person and that disaster killed off any tld but .com for major marketing money. It's why they said .com is king.

So for a company with a service or product geared to the public, you need a .com, for a tech startup that will 99% of the time never deliver anything, and never get near the public, their tld doesn't matter. It is what are they playing with in technology, AI or robotics or drones and who is the head and what think tank was he out of.

Now tech is tech, years ago tech companies raised millions without the net and most of these tech companies are all related to AI, good luck with that, AI is dead until humans can create the first cube and decagon data processors.

If any of these startups have end user consumer marketing in their plans, they're all dead projects without the .com

It's easy to get fools to part with first round startup money, it's the 2nd and 3rd round where the big wallets are and .com is branded on their eyeballs.

GD isn't even offering .ai names, hmmm, that's a huge red flag.

Thanks for your post, very interesting.
About termostore this is not strange, it's usual in Italy.
Italian companies always prefer the cc .it, few companies use .com, only big companies with offices around the world.
But, for the italian version of the site, they use the .it not the .com

Yep, in well developed areas of the world, the ccTLD is worth more than the .com to local companies, since their consumers are co.uk or .it or whatever centered, the reverse of the USA.

So say a snack name popular in only the UK or a food term, if it is in .co.uk it could easily sell and the .com would mean nothing to anyone say in the USA since it's a local food or snack.

Anything headed for an IPO on Nasdaq has to have the .com or it won't raise squat, this is only small first round money, a solid CEO makes more than all the sums raised in low end start up.

Ok. Sounds like .ai is not going to take off today ;)

Ok. Sounds like .ai is not going to take off today ;)

With a population of 13.5K in the country, why would anyone other than an AI startup even look at the tld?

GD is the proverbial HO in bs tld's (.co as Company was their whole idea) and even GD won't touch the 100 buck min. fees .AI wants.

Doesn't mean though some tech terms in .ai won't gather minor money with low 4x and maybe low 5x sales, but overall I don't see any real reason for any company be developing in that ccTLD.

There's no population and other than a vanity look to a AI firm, there's no reason to have a name in it.

But like all the new tld's there is short time spec money drooling over some keywords I guess.

I'd chase a tech term with a prefix in .com before I put 100 bucks into anything with .ai on it.

But it is interesting to see some startups handing their shingles on the tld, it goes to show you how gullible first round investors are.

I know. In the startup community, I'm seeing more and more.

Early stage startups are often run by amateur cheapskates and the influx of new extensions makes it easier to choose a domain. I think this is why you see gtlds registered by early stage startups but not heavily acquired in the aftermarket.

But isn't .com the widespread one?

Last year I was contacted by a startup about a .COM of mine. They are US-based but were using some odd extension probably a CCTLD I had never heard of. It looks like in the last year they registered a "not that great" .COM domain but are also using the equivalent .CO of my .COM domain. They contacted me again recently with a high $XXX offer. Between Crunchbase and their website I gather they have more than 100 employees and did more than $100 million in business last year. They recently raised an undisclosed amount of equity funding. I am not asking for five figures but I am not selling that name for $XXX either.

startups in their initial phase have a limited scope so they do not prefer .com as they don't have a global market, however if they keep the .coms also it might be good for future.
