Just found this website today. I'm working my way through the various links and resources.

I've owned a domain s p h i n x . c o m since 1992. This was prior to the www and it has never been used to host a website and I am no longer using for original purpose. Trying to decide what to do with it.

Sell, if so how? Auctions, brokers, etc? Which sites or brokers are best and least susceptible to fraud?

Or monetize in some other manner such as mini-website? Any other suggestions?

Over the years I have received offers for the domain somewhat regularly. Convinced it has significant value but need to decide how to monetize.

Your suggestions and recommendations are welcomed.

Welcome To NamePros @nap

s p h i n x . c o m is a great domain with potential buyers you can contact. Don't sell it for less than $xxxxx .. imo

There are many professional brokers in this industry, I have never dealt with one though. Other members can recommend a broker but I think if you believe you have good negotiation skills, you should try doing outreach yourself.

The best way to avoid fraud is to receive the payment through Escrow.com. Your broker, if you choose to work with brokers, will probably be paid at the same time as you, in a three-way Escrow transaction.

The domain is very good and indeed could be worth $xx,xxx+ to the right buyer. However, if you simply auction it, resellers may not bid very high. So, either wait for a nice offer, or auction when you have offers from several end-users who can be notified to participate in the auction. You could list the domain for sale ("make offer" listing) in Sedo, Afternic and Flippa, although the domain is so good that buyers will find you even without that.

g'day and welcome to NamePros,

I would suggest creating a sales landing page for the name, allow google to crawl it & peeps will know the Name is For Sale.

Cheers
Corey

Newbie myself but if you have had it since 92 I can not see how what Corey suggested above wouldn't be the right thing to do to start with. If that isn't a good first step I would really like to know why not.

Just trying to understand, y would anyone buy this for such a high value?

Because it's a dictionary word, short and charged with positive meanings, and a major tourist attraction.

This is a great domain name but you can't monetize it with s small site because the name itself does not mean anything commercially. But it is a great brandable name where a company can use it as a brand for a multitude of industries. So unless you have a ton of money and brand it yourself, your best bet is to sell it. This is a very strong name and many companies would be proud to own it, so your best bet is with a broker, or see if one of the domain conventions that include an auction would take it. I believe NamePros user @Slanted (Joseph from Epik) was looking for premium domain names to include at the upcoming Domaining Europe. Try and present it to him, I'm sure he will look positively on including it in the auctions. This domain needs to be exposed to investors with deep pockets in order for you to get a decent return on it. Good luck!

Also, try to get a decent landing page with a form for potential buyers to submit an offer without having to decipher your email address. You're just erecting walls in front of those who may be interested in purchasing it.
If you want to keep your current landing page. Add your clear full email address using an image, this way bots don't abuse it.

No problem. I hope you can help him @nap out. if he's still around.

JoeE, yes I am still around. The responses to my original post including several PMs have been very helpful. I hope to learn more this coming week.

I also appreciate the comments and suggestions regarding my very primitive landing page. Are there any examples of "good" landing pages to which anyone could point me?

Thanks to all. I only wish I had found this site earlier.

Well then, your best bet at this time is to get in touch through PM with @Slanted and discuss the details. Since he expressed interest above to chat with you. Usually, domain conventions (with auctions) attract a lot of people who understand domains and are willing to pay fair a price. Joseph is a great guy from a very reputable company, so, you're in good hands. Give it a shot.

Well.. It is my personal opinion. I love DomainMarket.com's new landing page. Classic and very elegant!
