With a new round of sTLD's later this year, and new gTLD's next year, I thought I'd open a discussion about new uses for TLD's.
When the original TLD's were created, they were intended for specific uses to subdivide the internet by user type. COM for Commercial users, ORG for non-profit organizations, NET for Networking, MIL for military, EDU as educationional, and GOV for government. Eventually the ccTLDs to divice by country/language. Obviously things grew fast and quick to the point COM didn't have enough flexibility and things spilled over to NET/ORG. Also, COM became the defacto standard, so even non-profits and network companies wanted the COM standard.
Before search engines and directories, this was very necessary. For a while, the seach/directories almost made this unnecessary. Now with the billions of resources on the interent, it may be necessary again to subdivide the the internet in some real ways to help find things.
I think just adding new gTLD's openly is kind of boring and redundant at this point. I also think there are other ways to subdivide the internet than organization type or country. Here are a couple innnovative TLD ideas I think might work below. I wondered what other NEW uses and Ideas for TLD's you may think of in brainstorming. To succeed, some would need to have restrictions of site conformance to the specific use or even new protocols. Many would have to be sponsored to work. Anyway, here are some of my thoughts.
.PDA - domains only for websites designed for PDA's. a PDA surfer could be safe in going to a .pda site knowing it would fit his smaller PDA screen size and have PDA browser only features supported.
.CEL - Similar to the above, but designed specifically for the even smaller cellular phone screens. May also have hyper-dialing of links so that the phone could make calls from .cel web links similar to email links. Click a link to "IM" to the cell phone via voice or text messaging.
.GPS or .LOC - Websites and browers tied to GPS locating systems. when in the vicinity of a site, the screen shows updated lists of nearby businesses or recreational sites clickable for menus, show times, directions, etc. Advance GPS devices could output to PDA like screens of sites within a certain selectable and specified ranges. Alternately, enter latitude#.longitude#.gps and find any website that corresponds to that location be it business, personal, government, or recreational. Think of the real estate possibilities.
.VPN - Virtual private network domains only accessible with secure VPN tunnels. Could be protocol or secure key based to further separate secure intranets from normal public internet traffic, while using the same broadband connections.
.NUM - A more open approach to the enum initiative. Specific number sets and separations could be assigned for different purposes. for example xxx-xxx-xxx-xxxx.num could be assigned equal to phone numbers. zip+4 codes (in US) could be assigned to XXXXX-XXXX.num showing a page of websites assocated with that area. different types of number systems could be assigned and separated by dashes. Canadian postal codes could be XXX-XXX.num, etc. Enter a product UPC code and go to the company that makes it. xx-xxxxxx could be for corporate tax id numbers pointin to a company website. This could be used for many types of universal number systems. These could be separately hosted or just pointed to product pages on normal websites.
.AUDIO - voice enabled websites for visually impaired or just a different protocol for sending audio only to computers and other devices. Like websites enabled for voice activated response. Might work for satellite based radio feeds like the XM radios.
By having different ways of finding data on the internet, a company or person could have multiple types of TLD's that could often point to the same place, but use a different channel to get there depending on what you know about them.
