New Style for The Orange Pages Please comment!

Hi all,

I'm a newbie here so treat me softly ok :) Would any of you like to wander over to my new design of The Orange Pages ? The Orange Pages is in the process of a rebuild and with a re-review of the last database we had, (over a million and a bit links) we are not starting to review and build on the fly. To help us do this we tried to keep things simple and also give the message that we are what we say we are, a totally safe site that never parses scripts from Dmoz and the like but really do pay people to review the submissions that come to us.

All comments are welcome as long as they aren't bitchy, and plain mean, I'm thick skinned and willing to learn from all and need input but spite clouds the judgement.

I like it, but I'm kind of bias :hehe: I'll keep an eye out for your comments, especially on my idea to build on the fly, in other words, if a site is submitted, it doesn't matter if the category doesn't exist at the time of submission, within 24 hours it will be produced using our previous data that we have.

Can't emphasise enough that we don't ever want to be a Dmoz, we want to be honest to all, and expect that back. We will be using a simular category structure as thiers as its one of the better ways to go but it is the design etc that I would love to hear your views on. You can also post a blog, I'd love that as the one thing I really want to do is to get the voice of the internet like you people giving REAL unbias views, not fake bias views, please or offend, The Orange Pages wants to be honest, will you all help me achieve this.

And seeing that this is all about domain names, what do you think of the name The Orange Pages?

Sorry to waffle on, first post nerves methinks!

Hi there

I like the colour scheme and the navigation box with the soft blue fade and rounded edges.

The friendly URLS are great. Just wondering if you could apply that to the "Latest Links" and "Top Hits".

I think having a space after the orange box at the bottom of the page between the "About us" etc links would be a good idea. You could also make the About us a friendly URL - /about and or /aboutus.

You could put the "About us" link somewhere more prominent.

Have you considered using any AJAX for the site?

Do you sort the pages by PageRank?

You may want to change the word "Featured" to "Top" listing to avoid any ambiguity of whether it is a paid advertisement or not.

Now into the source code :) Overall good, but some errors: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.theorangepages.com/

You really shouldn't use tables for styling the website as tables should be used for showing data, not holding images. You can do this with CSS.

Take a look at http://www.cssplay.co.uk

Thanks for the comments, Latest Links and Top links are going and being replaced by the about us bit which needs to be redone and the add url links etc. I haven't got around to validating it yet but will be doing that in next days.

Thanks for the feedback though.

if you don't mind me asking, what do you use for your internal search engine?

A multithread mysql database script simular to one you would find on the hyperseek search, which has been heavily adapated and modified. The original script we based it on (Open source) was very poor so we commissioned some techies who know their stuff to look at how best to manage large databases.

Why do you ask?

I run a business directory site for my territory (approx 5000 listings) and I am looking for a good internal search engine solution ...

i like the colors and the clean design but ithink you need something to make people come back like reviews of the websites or maybe a website of the day

A fair point and stickability is key, and we do have plans to offer not only reviews but also free websites for anyone including a domain name; you'll know when it happens.
