About 2 years ago I registered a .travel from new.net in the hopes that they would one day become the prime company of the .travel extension, however it doesn’t look like they will be. Has anyone any recent news on new.net and .travel? Thanks.

Not very much to say except .travel & the other extensions they sell are not going to magically turn into domains. No matter how you look at it, some call them subdomains, new.net calls them the future. Whatever it is you want to call them, they are not real domains and probably will never be. I have seen a few sell on ebay for some pretty nice prices. Its too bad that the buyers probably didn't know that only a minute few have the required plugin to view the not real domains. I have never been able to view a new.net site and alot of different machines I use do not either. Anybody have the link to the plugin?

I definately have to agree with you .edu, there's no point in buying domains that require outside sources in order to reach it.

.travel is excellant, think of usa.travel, canada.travel. But the domain u got from new.net is a subdomain which is of no use :(.

new.net is not an icann accredited registrar (http://icann.org/).

these are not "real" domain names, and they are not "real" sub-domains either. shoppers beware...

I would personally register a .travel domain name, but definitely not a new.net domain names. New.net domain names are worth nothing to me, even for names such as business.new.net.

In my humble opinion there's little point in registering this type of domains. You will be reaching a really tiny or non existent audience (those that downloaded the browser plugin or who know how to setup the alternate DNS servers) and furthermore you won't even get them spidered by any search engine the normal way (unless you uncover the trick).

The truth is, they are subdomains so a typical .travel domain such as

http://bali.travel

would only be accessed as:

http://bali.travel.new.net/

without the plugin installed.

I think there are better ways to spend ones moneys.

Here's a recent newsclip:

I'm in agreeance with the above posts. These "so called" extentions are not worth the effort or expense.

I knowingly registered a new.net name knowing that they were not real dn’s and nothing more than sub domains. But for sometime they were pushing to become an ICANN accredited registrar or overseer of the .travel extension, meaning that all subscribers names would become real dn’s if that did happen. I registered ny.travel, which in my opinion is one of the most valuable .travels there could be. I will continue to re-register that name just incase the small chance of it becoming a real extension through new.net.
