Hello,

As some of you may already know, for those of you that don't, I'd like to tell you about the new listing fees at SitePoint.

From now on, SitePoint is charging $9.95 for every site you post in the Sell Your Site section.

This is not really permanent, they are seeing how it will go and then that's when they can make their decision.

Personally, I hope it goes bad so the listing will be free again :D I also think this new listing fee will lure potential buyers and sellers away from the Sell Your Site forum at SitePoint D-:

What are your views? Do you agree or disagree with these new fees?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I agree that they should charge you to sell your sites on SitePoint. eBay charges listing fees, paypal charges transaction fees why can't sitepoint charge 9.95$ for you to get a few hundred dollars.. This will also increase the forum's contests, and many other things.

Very Simple.

I disagree. it's a forum so they should be free. if they want to charge moeny then money then they shouldn't allow site sales on the forum ..and open a auction site or smth like that!

I don't know about their "site" section, but their "domain" section is a waste of time of space. There are too many thread crashers (with barely any moderation to stop it), very few serious buyers, and hardly ever any decent sales. IMHO, they need to clean up their sloppy, poorly moderated forum before they even think about charging listing fees. Charging a fee is fine, but only if you provide a quality resource in return, and from my experience there, they do not!

:td:

Im done with sitepoint. last straw kinda thing.

the piss poor moderation, rampant ego's and absolute lack of progress (when compaired to namepros) just killed it.

the "management" there is just too far removed from the people... its stupid.

I agree. I've been with Sitepoint for a while and was shocked to see this decision. Believe me, I understand that a forum can be taxing and can cause financial issue. I also understand that when you own the forum you can do what you want.

However, I do not agree with the decision. IMHO a community is built around everyone giving something. It's no longer worth it for me since most of my sites sell in the <$100 range. I'd be spending 10%+ simply on listing the site. It's just not worth it when there are multiple venues listing for no charge.

I'd have to say that I agree with -db- as well. My experiences with both the staff and egos on the board have been negative many times. I reported a post for junk threads and finally a mod came and said don't trash it anymore. No efforts were made to actually clean it up.

I hope they think about what they've done and hopefully they may consider making it free again :)

I'll think about coming back once the egos die down which will probably be never. That's what differentiates forums such as NP from the crowd. The members don't act like they're superior to everyone else even though there are many guys who sell domains for 100x all the money I've ever made on domains lurking around. Even the thread about the changes turns into a - oh everyone should be able to afford it and it will cut down on the junk cheap websites.

It seems people forget that you must start somewhere. I suppose the irony of the situation lies in the attitudes that created this situation.

yeah you never know, that junk cheap site could be the next sitepoint.com or namepros.com, Never underestimate the cheap sites :D

Well some of you may know me from SP or DNF and I been posting my opinion over at SP about the matter. I agree with much of what is said here about the poor moderation and said so over there. A mod actually told me that it was against the forum rules to thread crap. Yah..right!

Well I been a member here a long time but mostly a lurker occasionally. I have seen this community grow and I am gonna make it my new HQ along with DNF. SP can kiss my butt. I am boycotting them and I will not reply to a sale thread nor spend my money there. Whether it is to SP or a seller. They are making a HUGE mistake and they got about 48 hours to fix it or the exodus will occur. They are only helping NP. I mentioned this site in almost every post I made and I also pointed a few SP members here.

They are just idiots and I can't believe how ignorant they are for business and marketing.

I used to like sitepoint.. until this ~ I think that listing the site there for money is stupid, but taking some % of what it sells for is an OK thing..

I also used to like SitePoint because there was usually alot of people willing to buy your site but now i don't really like SitePoint that much anymore :)

I can't be arsed paying 9 bucks to list my site.. it's another thing that they take 9 bucks from your sale, if you sell for more then some price.. but, taking monye for listing it will just make them loose members IMO

Well I was once a major buyer/seller over there. I won't say I'm leaving sitepoint like the rest of the yahoos. SitePoint has far to much to offer in other parts of the site. But I will of course not be paying to list a site there. They make the argument "well whats a few bucks when you're making $x,xxx per sale... Well sir, it's a LOT when I have this nagging voice in my head telling me I can do it for free on NamePros (Which by the way now has FAR more people browsing the sales threads because most all of the little guy buyers that sometimes step up and buy BIG sites have jumped ship.

I just sold a previous site at sitepoint quite fast before they bought the listing fees in (woow thank god lol)

This could only mean good things for namepros because here it is free and am sure there will be a outburst of new members here from sitepoint.

What they should of done is something like DNF, were you pay like a membership thing, yeh even that sucks but better than what they have just introduced!

Yeha I'm not even arguing the fee should be taken away completely, just $9.95 is too much to pay to list on a dead sales forum. The rest of the site is fine just that part of sitepoint has died off so it's pointless to pay such a fee to sell there for every single thread you start.

They will lose many members with this fees IMO
So it'll be better to offer again free listing

SitePoint was one of my stopoff points before arriving at NP.
I go back there, from time to time, (and to a couple of other sites oriented towards web design/programming), when I'm in a rush for specific info that I need right away. I've been there perhaps 2-3 times in last 6mos, because I usually get what I need here- either in archives, at Design and Development, or *on occasion* via direct PMs to members that I know and have established relationships with. <-(often the quickest, most direct route, but it's important not to overuse the welcome mat!)

Their domain name forum is secondary to their primary focus and serves the purpose of rounding out their program, and offering the novice, (ie the design student), an intro into domain names. There is a faction of developers who seem to be blind to the realities of the domain name marketplace and who are still caught up in the antiquated, "buy only to develop- domain name resellers are scum-bags" attitude. I have first hand experience at being the brunt of a few of these vents. If you think resellers are tight with the buck here, after spending some time at SitePoint, you will come back here w/ a new perspective of the word "cheap".

Charging for listing names at their site is a real laugher. I haven't checked out their marketplace in a while, but my guess is that this move is more of a policy to set limits and weed out some of the posts, than a revenue building move.

My criticism is not of SitePoint, but specifically the domain name discussion area of their forum.
