New Ebay Policy: Selling Domains Just Got More Expensive

Days of selling domain names on Ebay could be over if I interpret this new policy from Ebay correctly.

What I think it means is that you can no longer sell digital items on Ebay (ebooks, domains....) unless you do it through a classified ad, which cost $9.95 for 30 day listing.....

"Digital items policy
We consider digital items to be information or content that people download from a website or receive by email. This includes things like PDF files, electronic books (eBooks), recipes, or information like "Word of the Day."

You can advertise digital items on eBay as long as you follow all of these guidelines:

You can use only the Classified Ad format.

You can only list your item in the Everything Else > Information Products category.

You have to confirm your identity through the PayPal Verified process.

You need to state in your listing that you're the legal owner of the information (sometimes called intellectual property) or that you've been authorized to sell it.

Digital items can't have any sexually-oriented adult (pornographic) content.

If you sell software, make sure it doesn't damage anyone's computer, doesn't violate the user's privacy (so no spyware or cookies), and can't be used for malicious purposes like sending spam emails or spreading a computer virus. For more details, see our guidelines on HTML and JavaScript."

In other words, the seller of a domain name will now have to pay $9.95 just for the listing fee, though they won't have to pay Ebay any final fee as the domain is being sold through an ad!.

Anyone have more information on this?. Ok, I'm throughly confused on this now, I went to Ebay and there's a bunch of domains that are still listed!.....Monday morning blue's.... :-/ :-/

Domains are none of these. This has been discussed in the past and it has no effect on domains on ebay.

100% agree with Ross here. Although a domain name in a sense is a digital item it does not fit their particular description of a digital item.

I am 99% sure domain names would not be included.

I would have hoped domain names were included. Because nowadays there are many domain names in Ebay for sale at as low as $0.1.

So IF domain names were included, it would have a positive affect and increase the value/prices for that type of domain names that are in the lower price end. :)

But I agree with Ross and Peter that it doesnt seem as domain names are included.

Hey cool, if Domains are no longer seen as digital items perhaps paypal will offer more protection to buyers and sellers.

This rule was meant to target people selling dubious get-rich-quick ebooks mostly. Domain names haven't been affected - we still get the same generous treatment as all other Ebay sellers (no recourse for dishonest buyers, no listing refunds for non-paying buyers, exorbitant and unpredictable fees..)

Phew! I thought I was going to have to flush my money down the toilet. Glad to see Ebay willing to take my money the American Way...Fees!

haha, Peter...agreed.

I must admit I'm up for the policy even though it aint about domains, there are that many ebook sellers, web template sellers etc on eBay just spamming the listings, however will this mean ebook owners will start to advertise in other catagories?

I think they should ban all CHINESE sellers on ebay that sell imported good, its crashed the UK eBay business as they sell stuff way to cheap.

This is only for the ebooks and home biz categories. This doesn't apply on the domain names category.
