Just got this message in my Fabulous account and did not see it posted here yet:
.COM / .NET Transfer Protocol Change

Fabulous.com would like to announce that we have today changed protocols as required by the .COM / .NET central registry. This change is a mandatory implementation for all registrars by the 28th of October 2006.

While this change provides a variety of additional security measures, the most significant change for domain name holders is the required "authinfo code" for all .COM / .NET transfers.
I think the auth code has only been used for .org and .us to date. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Org, info, biz, and us to be exact.

Transfer procedures will remain the same, with the additional requirement of
giving the EPP code (aka auth code, transfer secret, EPP key) to the gaining
registrar.

There'll also be some additional changes, I think:

1. Change of status lines from the Registrar-Registry Protocol (RRP) to those
of EPP. Registrar-Lock will become Client Transfer Prohibited, Redemption will
become Pending Delete-Restorable, etc.

2. It'll finally show both technical and "social" contact data (admin, registrant,
etc.). In effect, it's changing from a "thin" Registry to a "thick" Registry.

Ironically it was Verisign who designed the EPP system that has been used by
the extensions mentioned above. But it's only by October they'll finally use it.
