Shall I backorder a network solutions domain through snapnames, thats what they reccomend. Do I have a better chance of getting it?

All expiring Netsol domains are sent to Snap for auctions.
If there are no backorders, then netsol will drop it.
So if the domain is with Netsol then you *need* snapnames which is their priority partner. It will not help backordering with other catchers in this case, unless the domain has effectively been dropped.

I am confused, if I backorder it and no one else does, do I get it?

If you backorder it and no one else does, yes you get the name for $60.
Of course if the name is good you will be in competition with other bidders to get the name :)

Well, I don't think anyone else will be going after it..

as stated above..If it's a popular competitive domain you can almost garentee it will be going into an auction. just my 2 cents

domain.org expired on 04/23/2007 and is pending renewal or deletion.

If no one backorders or bids, when does it get dropped into the wild?

Domain.org expires: 01-May-2008

A name like that probably would have never even made it to the drop.

No, I was providing it as an example.. The domain is a .org and expired on 04/23/2007 and is pending renewal or deletion.

Let me see if I can explain.

You used to be the only one to get a name years ago by backordering. But NetSol/Snapnames felt they were leaving a lot of money on the table - so they allowed multiple parties to backorder the same name - then have them fight it out in an auction format. So, backordering just puts you in queue for the domain auction that will take place when/if it expires. If you dont backorder - you wont be able to bid on it. If you are the only bidder, voila it is yours for $60.

does this make sense?

Yes, I understand that, but if no one backorders it, then what happens? Does it just get released, and if so, when is it free to register again?

If no one backorders from SnapNames, then the other drop catcher services get pretty much first dibs on the name. So if they have anyone who has backordered it, the highest bidder on their system will get it. If there are no back orders what so ever, then it will be available for anyone to purchase at normal rates. Typically if it is in pending delete, then it'll be released in 5-7 days.

Hmm, although it says pending delete or renewal, the expiration date is 2008?

It's normal, the registrar has preemptively paid for renewal with the registry. The registrar has up to 45 days to let the name drop and recover the fee.
For that reason you may notice a discrepancy between registry expiry date and registrar expiry date.
During that period they can either auction the name (find a new owner) or let it drop.
