I view .network (like all new gTLDs) completely different than .net, because I'm using the extension as a word and not a category.
I just today registered
beacon.network because I read about a new startup that is creating a marketplace to rent access to beacons already in the field.
https://www.beaconsinspace.com/
Obviously the .com (beaconnetwork.com) has a higher resale value, but:
* I like visually how the "." separates the two words, beacon and network, so that the two "n" are not consecutive.
* The .com has been registered since 2003 and is for sale at Sedo with "Make Offer". I'm guessing it will not be cheap.
* The cost of .com is about $9/year but the new gTLD, although more expensive, is only about $18/year. If I hold the domain for 10 year, my cost would be $180. The 10 year cost of .com would be $90, so the difference is only $90 more. I think I can easily sell this domain during the next 10 years for more than that. It is worth the risk.
* If beacons don't catch on, even though I think they will, I will be out very little (only yearly fees) compared to paying $x,xxx-$xx,xxx for the acquisition cost of .com plus the renewal fees.
