I have a dilemma and whilst I should know better I would welcome further comments and opinions.

Should I buy as an example samplename.net or sample-net.com or both and the reasons to support.

I think I have identified a reasonable domain name for a new site that I am building.

Would welcome further input.

Depends on the product, but it never hurts to buy the dash if it is a solid long term project. Will stop others from holding you ransom especially if it isn't TM'd

Also expensive .net @ GD - But I found .net only to be I think $6.99 at DD

as canton said. It depends on the usage. In my experience .net/hyphenated.com domains are visited between 10 and infinity times less than the .com. So it will be a matter off branding for whichever domain you choose. Expect to do a reasonable amount of SEO on your domain if you want it to rank well in Google.

In your two examples you don't mention samplenamenet.com, and it's not clear to me what you are leaving out with the hyphenated domain. Is this a one word of two word domain? If it's two words then my example of taking the net on the end might just make you domain too long to type in. If it's a one word domain then there are a lot of suffixes you could use, depending on the domain and it's use. SOL, OK, ETC, US, NET, and many others. But I wouldn't recommend that with a two word domain. Then I'd go with the net, or find an alternative .com.

Thanks for the reply. I actually meant sample-name.com to substitute for the non hyphenated version of the .net. So in your opinion the samplename.net is better than sample-name.net as it was difficult to find another .com with the keywords I have identified.

i have white-dress and black-dress in .com and they both do get some type in traffic, consider that if you became the next facebook how would you go advertising on the radio ? 'just go to face hyphen book dot com'

This is where they fall down, but some terms are strong enough to get a bit of type in traffic ....even-if-hyphenated

I would definitely go for a .com domain name wherever possible, but .net is a good alternative too.
