I am newer at this and I was wondering what would be a smarter investment. I have an idea for a name to buy. The .com is gone, but I can get either the .net or the .co.uk....

which is better?

Both the .net & .co.uk are decent ones, also depends on what you want to do with it. Is it for resale or development? Or you could just go & register both of them if you want

If you are targeting UK users: .co.uk
Otherwise go for .net is you need a more global TLD.

Net is just a second best while .co.uk is a Leader but in UK only.

Yes you have to look at your target market as mentioned, also having a .net can often lead to the customers going to the dot com version when they revist the site (if you develop) & you intend for the visitors to return. If you are starting a new brand not targeted specifically at the UK then I would strongly suggest looking for a new name & branding around an available dot com.
