I was watching TV and I noticed Zune uses .net, not .com. The .com just redirects to the .net. I was wondering, are a lot of companies doing this now. I mean .net fits better on some domains.

Thanks

Yes, zune.com redirect to zune.net.
Why this happen?

Because they developed the .net before they aquired the .com

I just saw a commercial for a new movie comming out and they used the .net, someone was probably squatting the .com

.net > .com :D

When you can afford to advertise something on TV, why would the domain extension matter?

Someday they'll do like this:

.Net ===> .Com

:bah:

it is odd...until the end of last year .net was being written off as the dying extension..it was difficult to find anybody to support .net .... and then the llll.net goldrush took off and hey who is the new shiny kid in town?

I like .net...actually my #1 site right now..is a .net.

The dot com is parked at Sedo and the seller wants at LEAST $1200 according to the page. He would probably "demand" more.

It's funny in a way becuase the dotcom holder is doing me a HUGE favor by keeping it parked and undeveloped. He will probably think as time goes on that the domain must be worth more as my site grows..making it even less likely he willl sell it. I hope it remains parked forever.

Also my .net has older reg date. The dotcom probably expired at some point and was caught.

More and more companies are seeing the .net as a solid alternative to the dotcom especially when they have to negotiate for thousands of dollars or start possible legal actions to get the com.

Whenever I do searches for new registration, drops, and such...I choose .com and .net only. The rest I don't need. I love too that .net is a cheaper registration/renewal fee.

I have also noticed more people are using .net's, but I still prefer .com

.net just means they couldn't get .com. That is what I think whenever I see a .net site developed.

now that .com is too pricey for the new investors, the second in line only has to get better and closer to the king of extensions.

notice how LLL.net values are rapidly increasing whilst the .com version is in contrast on a slow growth.

Also give a thought to the possibility of reverse highjacking cases; makes an investor invest far and wide into "cheaper but sureshot" investments than single high priced domains.

.net is here to stay. It is an extension of the .com saga.

i often develop .nets because all of the .coms are being squatted by you jerks :P

I feel ya. There is a site i'm planning to develop soon, I have the .net and shot an email off to the .com owner (it's currently parked). IMO the domain as it is today (undeveloped in any tld, and available in all tlds except .com and .net) is worth at most a hundred bucks, although I would have paid as much as $1000 because of my development plans. Well I get an email back with a $9000 price tag. Thanks but no thanks, I found a different domain from a reasonable domainer. No way i'm putting time and effort into developing the .net just to increase this jerks .com value.

Too many people get $$$ in their eyes as soon as someone shows any interest in their crappy domains.

I have seen a few new web startups grabbing the .net extension as well.

As long as google looks favorably on .net sites, then the extension as value IMHO

One more datapoint, I've had more offers on my .NET domains that any other extension in the past six months. I sold weddinggown.net and richmondweddings.net and had offers on others like fitnesstrainers.net

As long as google gets a .net on the front page of targeted terms..

Many small businesses are also using .NET as an alternative. BaltimoreLegal.net has a big sign on the Baltimore Beltway and I see many contractor trucks with .NET domains.

i read on domainfood or one of those domain news sites 2 years ago that most businesses feel .net is the extension they will use if .com is gone. THATS VALUE for us! Those are the possible end users(with $$$ to spend), and so to underestimate .net is naive. As a domainer, i try to stick with .com, but if its a name i really like and .com is gone, i'll get the .net. I think selling .nets is a bit harder on NP, which discourages me a bit, but i think its a decent extension to say the least

A lot of domains "Look" better in .com
If .com and .net were 100% equal in value and you had the choice between "zune.net" and "zune.com" you'd go for .net (Well, i would) because it "Looks" and "sounds" so much better
