hello

I've been approched trought my email at whois by a movie marketing company, asking me if i was selling one domain, i said i was selling it and asked them for an offer. They replied making an $500 offer.
$500 is good as it only cost me $5, but how can i get more without scaring them away?
What should be my next step?

thanks

If they said "a little" too expensive, then maybe you can still pull it off.

However, you did mention that the first go-round "they" identified themselves as a company ("it"), but now switching to the reflexive singular... Just noticing.

In any event, if they really are a movie co., they'll have more allocated for the website than $500. Hell, a lot more if they offered that as the opening.

My gut would have countered $25,000 and let them work at me from there (And identifying who they are in the opening of the negotiations is bad form).

i've found googling the email adress that the person i was dealing with was ceo of movie marketing company, and also checking the email site.
He never identified as being part of a movie marketing company, i did a resarch and found that.
I was planning on asking the 25000, but at last minute i reconsider it.

The "a little too expensive for me" give me some hopes.
I waiting for his counteroffer now.

If they get back to you too quick they will show that they are very keen, if they want to haggle over the price they won't want you to think they are desperate.

Patience, I would'nt attempt to contact them again, you and all here have no idea who bad they want your domain, yes, you hit them with a high counter offer compared to theirs but that does not mean they do not see value in the name.

Unfortunately it might not go your way this time, but time will tell - a name is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it - no more - no less !

Best of luck, and let us know how it goes.

I do agree here. A "good" haggler will wait a bit and not appear too keen. Just wait alittle :imho:

lol, dont be frustrated. wait for 1 week or two and offer a lower price. If they deny it, just let it go.
Good luck.
