Welcome to the forum!
If you don't want to spend more than $8, you could try to find an unregistered domain name from godaddy.com or any other registrar with a domain suggestion tool. Just type in animal-related names and see what comes up.
You aren't likely to find anything like paws.com for less than several thousand dollars.
If you are looking for a name that is available to register the problem is that if someone posts it here another reader may register it before you do.
If you have a budget in mind I'd suggest starting a thread about this in the Domains Wanted section here http://www.namepros.com/domain-names-wanted/ and describe your project and your budget and people will post names they are willing to sell for you to consider.
A side note, animals is a pretty broad topic, are you going to cover ants to elephants in your forum? If you could provide a tighter definition of the purpose of your forum it would be useful.
This sounds like an interesting forum your looking to develop. I haven't heard of to many animal forums on the web. I would have to say the best way to find an unregistered domain is to use the tools at your registration provider to help you locate a helpful domain. Another idea might be to take out that great old book on your book shelf we all know as a thesaurus. If one animal name is taken, it may lead you to another word that nobody else has thought of yet. Sometimes that helps.
