Well first off do you know any web development languages? It is ok if you don't but I highly recommend getting familiar with the basics like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc. so that you understand how web pages are constructed. Once you have a good understanding of that then this process will be much easier on you.

The problem with websites is that more than likely there are already numerous sites on the net like the one you want to create. What you have to do is provide something that stands out from the rest and offers the vistor something unique. If we all looked the same and wore the same clothes each day think how boring the world would look. Take that same philosophy and apply it to your website and you will go far.

To further answer you question there are many directory scripts that you can use for free that have been created to accomplish what you are wanting. However, like I mentioned above I would highly recommend some good planning and customization to make it different from the rest. I hope this helps.

i know how to make websites, i know html and i know how php/mysql works when implented in a website, the thing is i don't know where to start SEO and visitor wise...
as you mention in your post, there are indeed hundreds of similar sites and it's up to me to create something that stand out from te rest, i can do that, i have a creative mind, but to get visitors , one has to promote the site and use the right keywords, that is where the shoe hurts,i read a lot about SEO, but for some reason , i don't see the light, lol, call me stupid, but i think many have that same problem.

if you know where i'm heading at

SEO is its own "beast" and from my own studies this is what I gathered:

1) Keyword research - It is very important to carefully conduct keyword research to see what terms that visitors are typing in to find related websites. Two good tools that I use are inventory.overture.com and keyworddiscovery.com (which is offering free trials right now) to do my research. Once I understand what keywords are the best choice then I move on.

2) HTML fundamentals - Your design should include a title tag, meta tags, headings, and paragraph tags which contain the keywords that you are optimizing for.

3) Content is king. Write you content as if you were writing a book. Don't stuff it with keywords but rather flow them nicely in with the other content so that they appear natural. Search engines are begginning to understand and act more human-like when analyzing a web page.

4) Link exhange/PPC - To get traffic flowing you will either have to trade or purchase links from high quality related sites in order to raise awareness of your site and start up the trail of PageRank. Natural SEO takes a few months to take affect so that is why most people joing a pay-per-click program to get things started.

This just barely touches parts of SEO. If you have specfic questions then post them over in the Search Engine category and others and I will be glad to help.
