So I just purchased a domain with existing traffic due to a previous site that ranked pretty well
in Google and Yahoo for a few keywords.

The domain of the site is Diet and weight loss product reviews

I had somebody install my first WP blog for me and had them put it in a subdirectory in my hosting account titled /blog.

When I pointed the main domain to the subdirectory, it created all kinds of DNS problems so the main domain name now has some code that redirects to the subdirectory.

A) Does that affect the ranking of my main domain name in the SE's? Should I be building backlinks directly to the subdirectory or just to the main domain?

B) Would it help with SEO to have the blog migrated over to my main hosting folder?

Thanks in advance.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

You can build backlink to both the main and sub page, with different anchor text that best suit the page.

Directs to /blog/?

I don't see why you have the site redirecting to jdfjfjsdfreviews.net/blog/.

It should just be pointed to the main domain. The /blog/ is not needed. Your review site can be hosted like a blog but you don't need to set it up to point that out. I hope that makes sense.

You can have your blog in your subdomain and you can build backlinks for your main domain and for your blog too. If there is no useful content on your homepage, and that you will be updating your blog regularly, then may be transferring it to the main domain is ok.
