After doing a couple of weeks of research I wish to dump a couple hundred down the domaining drain. But before I do, please point to the right drain.

1. Hand-register good* domains with decent exact match search volume and CPC.

2. Hand-register domains that sound good like AskYourBaby.com and develop it into a website related to it and Then try to sell it or expect an offer.

3. Try to get decent names from expired lists that could have traffic or PR or backlinks.
I have an idea how to check for these stats but Im looking for names I could buy for $XX and sell for $XXX, and usually these names have these stats empty.

*by good I mean that comply with the characteristics that make a domain name valuable.

Please tell me what is wrong with this (even if it implies the whole post) and what I should be doing (even if it implies going back to work).

All options will work, but imho, #3 works best. But that just imho, just in case people take issue with me. But you have to know how to value domains.

Personally, I would go with 2, but that just happens to be my area of expertise. I wouldn't recommend dumping your entire budget there on day one if you haven't done it before.

Option 4 is to start with two or three "decent" domains and just spend your time flipping up to better domains. I'm sure you can find someone out there who will take a hundred bucks for their old site; nobody said you have to go through resellers.

well well well..
If you want to buy a name why don't you try to post it here on NP? Maybe you will find a good deal.
Hand reg is great as long as you know what to buy and you are " good " at picking domains.
DON'T register the first one you find...wait until you see the name that conquers your heart, your brain and the one from which you can CLEARLY hear a " ka chiiiiiing " sound....
Just be picky. That's all. Good Luck

1. Hand-register good* domains with decent exact match search volume and CPC.
Based on my experience here at Namepros, many people have overestimated their talent in hand-registering good* domains. The only way you can say you are good at it, is to count the number of domains you have SOLD on a "consistent" basis. Don't build your confidence based on some "lucky success". Investing money on "luck", would burn your wallet because you are made to believe you can duplicate your sale and so you go on a continuous buying spree.

2. Hand-register domains that sound good like AskYourBaby.com and develop it into a website related to it and Then try to sell it or expect an offer.
The problem with this, is that many domainers are not really website developers. Sure there are lot of hack templates out there. Mostly you get stumped on "content". You need the search engines to find you first based on your content. Then "wow" your users with your Joomla/Wordpress templates once they arrive on your site.

Generally though, doing these stuffs (including website maintenance) take a lot of time and effort, that Domainers eventually realize its eating up their time they should have spent looking for domains. They eventually give up development, and just go back into buying and selling just the domain names.

3. Try to get decent names from expired lists that could have traffic or PR or backlinks.
The word TRY here is a big word. Yes, you can try. But its a crowded arena. How crowded? 12 billion domainers all scavenging the expired lists trying to beat each other. Some of your competitors for these decent drops, are not even human. Your chance is very slim.

Thank you alien51, really appreciate your answers.

But please help me modify option 2 into a viable option because its the one Im really interested in. Lets say I got the know-how to at least make a single page eye-opening site. Nothing complicated, just a portal explaining the possible use of the site. Lets say I dont expect to have good SEO but I will pitch emails to several companies related to the domain/site Im selling. Since I will not be spending too much time and money into each site I will just be expecting to turn low $XX into mid $XXX.

Please evaluate this option.

Yes, many domainers have done that option. Then they list them at Flippa, or they run their own listing site where they showcase their domains in various mock-up websites.

Another option is to extend this "one-page eye-opening site", into a multi-page "minisite" where they also run PPC ads. If you spend some time developing a convincing minisite, you could even gain passive income from wayward clicks here and there. In one year, your click revenue could be enough to pay-off the renewal cost of your domains and extend their lives for another year if you have no buyers yet.

Your only problem when you are running a minisite, is that potential domain buyers who check out your domain might think the domain is already taken so they leave and go look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you put a banner on the frontpage saying the domain is "For Sale", websurfers looking for content would immediately conclude you are a domainer and will leave immediately and not click on your ads.

It's up to you to weigh your options.
