Hi, I'm thinking of setting up a sort of service, and I was wondering: if I were to tell other people to change their domains' nameservers to my nameservers, would it point to the index page of my site?

No, I do not think it would point to your index page if others change their domain nameservers to yours. They can forward the domain to your site and then it will go to your index page.

what do you mean by forward?

..if after they changed their domain's dns to that of yours and added them to cpanel and did it as domain redirect then answer is yes.

I don't want to redirect, I want their domain's index page be my index page, but still on their domain.

well if that simple you just can give them index.php that will call your index page without them changing dns much convenient and faster for them
and have them change .htaccess for you as well all errordocuments of 404 should be going to your page.

but I want to make it so that if another domain is pointing to my index page, the page is different. I need to connect to my database to check their domain. It's going to be like a sales page, does that help?

eh, why do you want someones domain to point to your site, maybe if you tell us what service your providing we can help more? if its webhosting, you have a reseller account, vps or dedicated server, usually you have 2 ips for your domain name to which you create 2 nameservers say ns1.yourdomain.com - 192.168.0.1, ns2.yourdomain.com - 192.168.0.2, you then set your domain to point to these, tehn if someone buys hosting from you they point their name to ns1, ns2.yuordomain.com, you then set up a hosting account, there domain then points to that account...

no, more like a sales page for their domain.

just design a good sales page and let them upload it on their site but it will not require the index or dns mod for it, not unless you're dealing with domain parking services or any thing requiring dns services or web-based email services but in this type of service cname mod will do but if it's mere sales page the suggestion above i have will do.

But I need to connect to my database! This is dynamic, and yes, I will be doing some sort of domain parking.

my answer to all your question is yes, once domain is pointed to your dns you control everything there is to it. dns services, cnames, mx, txt, etc.

connecting to your dtabase is another story, but if the domain is pointed to your dns it becomes one of your web site the only thing that you can do for your client is give them ftp which is out of the question as i see now what you need.

so how should i do it? Do I tell them to change their nameservers to my nameservers? Then what? I'm hopeless with CPanel.

yeah something like that then on your cpanel add that domain, if it's already pointing to your dns, the way to check it is use
http://whois.sc/
for example, if their domain is theirdomain.com
type http://whois.sc/mydomain.com
scroll down and see this:
Domain servers in listed order: compare it to your dns if it is the same then you are are ready to add it in cpanel, click on addon domains (depends on cpanel version)

type in their domain name on space provided and then specify the subdirectory

would their domain then redirect to my subdirectory, or would it stay on their domain?

in this case theyre already hosted on your server so you control it, like i said the only left for you to give them is to give them some ftp account to go with it.

after their change of dns, whatever subdirectory you like to show on their frontpage wil be fairly up to you. still they're using their domain to do that.

I tried adding a domain to a hosting account, and when I went to my domain, it redirected me to the subdomain, instead of staying on the domain. Am I missing something? And why would I need to give them an ftp account?

you better check if redirect is enabled on that particular domain, ftp account giving is fairly up to you you can give or not.
