I noticed recently that akon.com is being auctioned and the latest bid is 200k.

That made me wonder, could you use popular rappers/actors/celebrities names or nicknames as a .com or was this a small exception?

Thanks!

Only other reference to Akon would be the annual A-Kon convention in Dallas. I'm relatively certain that there would also be a TM that's enforceable, same would go for the singer.

This I strongly disagree with this. We do have a right to use domains in good faith and run true fansites. If you like a certain celeb and want to setup an fansite, then that is your right to do so. The problem I have is probably 99% of celebs sites are shams and looking for that payoff at some point. There are some really good fansites out there and they have been protected as free speech.

Unfortunately, the 99% has ruined it for the other 1%. I run my fansites and I have helped others in establishing their own fansites. If you have read my posts these past 4 years, you will see I am very clear. I will help someone who truly wants to do things the right way, I will not help squatters. And I am pretty good at knowing which side of the fence a person is on, no matter how much they try to BS me. :)

I agree with your perspective, and I think yours would be the 1% of such people on this website :P

When I mean they have no business registering the names, I usually mean they shouldn't be "parking" them with ads.
