I'm probaby the only one but prior to registering I'll check the availability at Namecheap.com. I read about doing searches at Godaddy and being snapped up and I was pretty happy that none of that was happening over here at Namecheap.

But just last night, I ran a search via Namecheap and found a name I kinda like was available but didn't get.

And I just checked few minutes ago, *POOF* regged on 05-aug-2007. Blah.

Just a warning to those who care. :'(

Always check domains on whois.sc only.

Regged by some company in china I believe and it's a name that is only known in my country, so ya. I truly doubt it's a coincidence.

Just some friendly advice.

Why? TBH, that is the WORST place to use.

Hmm, my bad. I don't think it's a china company...

Status: ok

Registrar: SPOT DOMAIN LLC DBA DOMAINSITE.COM
Whois Server: whois.domainsite.com
Referral URL: http://www.domainsite.com

Name Servers:
ns1.felart.net
ns2.felart.net

I'll definitely be doing all my searches at Moniker from now onwards.

I've never had a problem with NameCheap's availability checker, while I've had names snatched from DomainTools (whois.sc).

are they safe??.... just wondering... :?

(they are very good at logging/archiving your whois searches... that is their job, primarily :))

That's all the info I can find, somehow, the registrant's details aren't showing up.

Just sharing my experience guys, if namecheap works for you, no reason not to continue using it. :)

here is their reply

Hello,
We do not proceed with such business practices nor would we consider acting in such a manner,
We apologize for the inconvenience and the situation in which was placed on your friend

It happened to me at namecheap before too. I registered a bunch of Vietnam related names while working in vietnam. But my application at namecheap was denied because I was working in Vietnam, where I guess alot of fraud takes place, so my registrations was lost. After clearing up the matter, I tried to register the names again, but all the names were taken.

Anyways, waited a month or so, and the names became available. Apparently when the names were dropped, tasters took them but then dropped them.

You might want to try registering the name after a month or so.

All I can say is that I have had no problems with namecheap so far.
I love their support and reliability.

NameCheap do not sell their lookup lists. It is either coincidence or you (personally) are being watched. Installed any domain-related software recently?

I prefer to use Whois Lookup sites before checking domain availability. Personally, that's why I setup qWhois.net so I could safely lookup names for myself without losing them to tasters. I never sell my lists and they wouldn't fetch much anyway because the traffic is so low! :D

There is a sticky thread around about Whois Tools, many of which are bulk and are safe to use. Moniker, SaferWhois etc. are all included in this list.

The safest way though is to create a script or program that will do it for you.
