Name Status Question

I have a rather thorny one here.

I attempted to transfer a group of names on 10 Dec, all w/ expiry periods of 12 Dec to a) move them away from a registrar I am less than happy with and b) take advantage of a 24hr promo for transfers $5.50 ea. The transfers failed due the registries refusing the AUTH codes that were provided to me by the current registrar. I contacted the registrar I attempted transfer to, provided them w/ a list of names that failed, per their request, so that "they could put them through".

The new registrar apparently did nothing- I never recieved an email directly from the rep confirming transfer. Today I get a new reply from the same rep I was dealing w/ Dec 10 in answer to my inquiry about the transfer status stating:
"I can not transfer domain names that are expired at all. No registry is allowed to do that. Please let me know if these are all expired or not and which ones,
than you."

Duh! They weren't expired when I attempted the transfer 3 days ago. I used the AUTH codes presented to me by GoDaddy. I followed the rules to the "T", doing all that was in my power to make the transfer happen.

So now I have a list of names that have passed expiry.

Questions:
-Am I now SOL w/ transfering these names, even though all the requests for transfer were initiated prior to expiry? If so, than the only way to keep them
would be to renew through the current registrar, (GoDaddy), I suppose.
- Should Registrar still be committed to transfering the non-expiring names that were on the list sent to them *at the promo rate*, albeit the 24 hr time limit has passed?
- Is it possible that the AUTH codes were bogus or the transfer was "tripped up" by intentional negligence , which inhibited the transfer, so that the names would have to be retained at the current registrar to be renewed?

NOTE: I am going to use the link to this thread in future correspondence w/ registries and registrars in an attempt to track down the cause of the transfer failure.

I just went through a Bad Experience like this as well - Costed me 110$ to renew 1 Domain .... I also waited until the last few days to try to transfer - Failed as well (Think they said the "Locking Feature" was on though I set it to "unlock" before hand)

Because it was sentimental to me I paid 110$ - Then another 6$ to transfer it anyway ! ........ At least it is reg'd well into 2006 now .........

And we haven't even gotten past the introduction!
I have been the victim of several similar system breakdowns over the past year, that range beyond domain names. To quote Network, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

(Think they said the "Locking Feature" was on though I set it to "unlock" before hand)
The "silent" lock, as mole put it the other day. I like systems that follow the instructions and the intentions of the user.
When the system is at fault, the system,it's creators and it's beneficiaries should be responsible- not the user/customer.

My intention was to begin consolidating all of my names w/ one registrar, simplify my life, and save a few dollars. I created a plan and executed it correctly. My plan has been thwarted by forces that I have no control over, and I am left holding the bag. I will not let it drop.

GoDaddy was OK through the first few years when I didn't have a frame of reference. Problem is, I now have a frame of reference, and I'm really not particularly impressed w/ any registrar. Given that the pricing is comparable, the factors that would distinguish a registrar are ease of operation, (ie a smart, user friendly interface), and the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of customer support.
These features require intelligence and a level of commitment to cycling back some of the profits into customer care. Excessive greed eventually becomes transparent.

I have an enom resellers acct, but I haven't felt comfortable w/ the enom interface, or security, and really haven't gotten into the scene over there- don't know the ins and outs and exactly how some of their programs work.

I am a little dismayed w/ DomainSite- don't like competing for drops w/ my registrar, and the people over there are actively regging drops. They also have previously lied to me in an attempt to cover their ass for an error they made, so I can't trust them.

RegisterFly customer support, who I am currently dealing w/ for the 1st time, has responded to my emails, but has yet to give a complete answer addressing the questions I have presented, despite all of the problems I am currently having w/ transfer attempts. I swear that this one guy I am dealing w/ over there doesn't know how distinguish between a registry and a registrar and I have an email to prove it. (Either that, or he's being coy/evasive/snotty, which is even worse.)

We all know, (or should know), about Network Solutions and Register.com

1 and 1 is making a big advertising push this month, and is an intriguing prospect. Anyone have any history w/ them?
