I have tried to quite on several occasions..I just get all messed up in the head though and can't stop. I'll be sitting at my computer, or walking down the street and I'll think "I wonder if that name is available" Next thing you know I'm rushing home, forgetting what I was out for in the first place. I'll rush to check the name. If it's taken, I start searching for similar names. One idea feeds another and another. The next time I look at the clock I've been searching for names for 9 hours, the sun is coming up and I've spent $50 on names I'll never use, can't sell, and don't even sound that good the next day..I know I have a problem..I think we need a place for people like us..Hmmmm..We could start our own group..
DNA (Domain Names Anonymous)...it's a shame DNA.com is taken..Hmm..I'm sure there is something similar..I'll go check..

Heya Anthony !

After several years in the frontlines of the Internet biz (doing testing, development, and project management), still without my own domain, the .com domain name for my surname (which is a relatively common one) was looking likely to drop. The former owner was a consulting firm which changed its name when bought by another last year, and then even the new one was bought by a larger company some months ago. Such was the occasion for me to really get educated (and updated) on the current status of the expiration game. I had already gotten "the" snap on the domain last year, but *just* (and I mean three days) before the drop snap changed their policy. Based on the advice I got here, I ended up with every drop service but godaddy, whose exclusive ~lame~ attempt at the drop was already taken.

In the mean time I picked up a really kool 3-letter .net that I intend to develop, a great porn site domain (for when I have time) as well as some groovy domains for some friends of mine.

In the end I did in fact get the domain for my last name. The financing involved selling my antique sportscar and half my wine collection, but it was all worth it. For me, and after working the Internet biz since 1998, not having the .com for my own name was going to be like making ERII move out of Buckingham Palace... unthinkable !! The anxiety in the final weeks was horrible; I could hardly sleep. The closing minutes of the auction on Namewinner, who caught the drop were more intense than my best roulette runs. There was some residual drama due to the fact that Namewinner/Dotster were having massive billing problems that week, and actually took both sites down for a couple hours, while attempting to fix their friggin' billing service <gasp>. After finally getting the name and getting the DNS to resolve correctly to what is for now just a rinky-dink site, I feel an incredible relief. It is enough to make up for many other disappointments in my life in recent years. And I feel that I must have kids...

Anyhow, that's probably more story than you were looking for Ant, but thar it is. I did get one stupid domain that I didn't want, similar to another recent thread re: pool, but I'm sure it was totally my fault. I feel like Pinocchio after his transformation... a real boy.

Cheers and have a good week
