I just managed to cut down my computer's RAM usage to just 268MB. I was aiming for 250MB, but that's close enough for me. I've had to sacrifice a bit in terms of GUI niceness, but I've ended up with a nice easy-to-use system, which runs lighting fast as a bonus. If anyone wants to know what I did, I've made a blog post about it today (on my blog Monday is simplicity day).

Can I have a computer please? No fancy effects, I’m on a diet…

I managed last 4 years on 128 MB ram.

But the new PC I purchased just last month is 2GB RAM. Core 2 Duo.

Feeling like I have much more extra time on my hands now.

I would try to use less RAM, but I would have to really compromise on the nice features. My laptop is using about 400/500MB of RAM and has every single graphical effect I can find enabled - it makes my mum dizzy!

YES! I got it down to under 250MB! I removed a few programs and installed lightweight replacements. I'm expecting it to go down a bit more, as I'll be replacing some more programs later. When I've got everything done, I'll post a screenshot.

You know... The average user will probably be happier with the desktop edition - it comes with a nice pretty GUI and a ton of software :p

Edit: Screenshot! Oh, and I managed to get it to 220MB of RAM with even more features - not sure how I managed that.
