.info My little portfolio after 18 months!

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
I hope the following will be good news for those who have invested in .info.

Background

About two years ago I managed to register a ccTLD domain, the development use of the domain was obvious and involved the production of a major Geo-site/sites. Immediately I started work on researching the subject matter and formulating a business plan. It was during the business plan evaluation that I realised that my reach to the US market would be weak without spending a fortune in marketing and advertising. Unfortunately, not having won the lottery, the projected horrendous cost getting into the largest national market would be too great for me to proceed.

Then about 18 months ago luck struck (no I didn't win the lottery) I saw some US geo.info domains for sale, a quick few checks such as Google search stats, comparrison of .info and .com values in the aftermarket (ignoring the 'dreamers'), etc., it seemed that I could utilize these domains to get a very tiny finger tip hold in the US market. I therefore immediately purchased the domains and started hunting out more in the same niche. Ever since that first purchase I have checked daily for drops (when my epilepsy would permit) and even purchased some on the aftermarket!

Today

I now have a portfolio that covers over 1,760 US Counties, Parishies, Boroughs, and Independent Cities with populations of 20,000+, this represents approx. 97% of the total niche! What of perhaps the most important statistic available, Google 'local' exact searches? For these domains Google totals circa. 3 million per month, so that will equate to about 4 million searches a month in total accross the search engines. This definately shows people are 'associating' with their counties, etc., even though there is little in the way of developed sites to find.

Let's face it folks, I should never have been able to accumulate this portfolio, and its creation has been more by luck than anything else. It should also be taken into account that 'IF' the geo-domain .com owners had got their act together and actually co-operated together, then this portfolio and the resulting opportunity for mass development would always at best have been second fiddle.

Development

I have tried to obtain the services of a 'developer', offering a 60% share of the gross revenue for development and continued running of the proposed websites, unfortunately to no avail. I therefore have no option but to develop these myself, that means they will be nowhere as good as they should be and is therefore in reality an unfortunate waste of potential, but I have no realistic alternative.

So what is the upshot of all of this?

1) I have now stopped 'domaining'. From here on in I am just going to liquidate what domains I have that are not associated with the development plans.

2) I will not make the mistakes Marchex made with their 'Zip Code' website portfolio fiasco. Only a fool does not learn by another's mistakes.

3) I will utilize this portfolio to enable and support the development of the single ccTLD domain into an internationally recognised Geo-based site.

4) I will welcome contact from those .info domain owners who either own the unhyphenated domain where I own the hyphenated, or more especially from those who own any of the relevent 15 domains where I own neither (hyphenated or unhyphenated). My hope would be that we can work together.

I think this may end up being the weirdest thread in the history of NamePros.

TBO, I hope that you don't consider any negative-sounding remarks on my part to be mere sour grapes. I'm sure you're a grown up and have a plan, and anything I might say about the matter at hand is actually intended to be constructive, and comes from experience.

I think some of the backlash, or maybe all of it, to your original post comes from this statement:

Let's face it folks, I should never have been able to accumulate this portfolio, and its creation has been more by luck than anything else.

The reason you were able to acquire this portfolio is, in fact, that as domains qua domaining, the portfolio is garbage. .info domains got collectively and brutally slapped by Google once in the past, and they are consistently the hood in developed sites -- for any one quality site on a strong keyword .info you could name, I could find fifty that are splogs or link farms or whatever. The low first year cost and constant GoDaddy specials on .info all but guarantee its place as the princess of the ghetto in the domaining world.

That said, your plan has little to do with the domains on "domainer merit" so the sub-regfee inherent value of the portfolio is an irrelevant tangent.

FM, as for your point that up to 30 counties (in the case of Washington County) can have the same name is so simple to deal with it took me seconds to work out how to differentiate the visitor target required. However, for obvious reasons I think, I am hardly likely to blurt it out here.

As an experienced and ongoing geo developer, I sure wish you would. :)

In case it isn't Maxmind, I will suggest that using Maxmind to sort traffic into folders or subdomains works pretty well for that kind of thing, although if you have fleshed out sites sitting on separate subdomains and a dynamic page for the index this can create load issues.

One other piece of advice, also from the standpoint of an experienced geo developer and offline promoter: subordinate the hyphenates. Ditch them, do them last, wait for non-hyphenates to come available or go after them more aggressively. The power of local/offline promotion is word of mouth, and a hyphenated domain is poison to that power, because of the leeching effect that people's memories have when repeating things that they've heard or seen, but not written down. No matter how hard you try, you'll lose some traffic to "countynameinfo.com" because people just won't make the connection to the .info TLD even if they see it in print. Losing even more to eg. baltimorecounty.info would be a travesty, and it absolutely 100% guaranteed will happen if you invest in promoting the hyphenate. So, if you won't abandon them entirely, at least consider leaving them for last when some of the rest of the portfolio achieves cash flow or at least breaks even.

Best of luck to you, and do keep us posted.

Frank

.info domains got collectively and brutally slapped by Google once in the past

This is a bit of a misnomer. What happened was Google had a glitch and some .info pages were removed from the index for a few hours one day. Some bloggers decided Google not liking .info's would make a good story and bring lots of visitors.

What they didn't know or conveniently chose to forget was the glitch also involved the removal of lots of .co.uk pages. Now if those same bloggers had said hey Google no longer likes .co.uk pages they would have been widely ridiculed.

Given all the PhD's at Google it's highly unlikely that they are ever going to discriminate by TLD. In fact Google's representatives have publicly said a number of times they do not discriminate by gTLD.

Anyway by volume there is far more spam in .com than .info so removing or downgrading of TLDs by the number of spam sites would be a bit daft :)

Hi Frank, Firstly let me assure you I have only taken 'exception' to one poster on this thread (and I see no point in even replying to ANYTHING he posts), and it most definately is not you. The great thing about NP is the general open-mindedness of the members, we may disagree, but we try and discuss points generally, and after the discussion we may still disagree but IMO there is little or any bitterness between members.

Obviously again I have to be a little cautious what I say, but I totally agree with the point about the hyphenated domains. I have already posted that I would welcome contact from the owners of the unhyphenated versions of county names where-by I have the hyphenated version. I can and will plump this out further here, for I have now already had contact with some such owners since posting on here and the other forum.

I realise that the hyphenated domains are indeed not as 'friendly' as the unhyphenated versions, it is for this reason that I make the owners of the unhyphenated domains the simple offer of joining in the venture by developing their domains along side me and running the sites on the same basis, and under such circumstances the hyphenated domains would simply be put into hibernation and not be developed. Of course where the unhyphenated is not developed then the hyphenated would be. But yes the order of development of the domains takes into account as one aspect whether the domain is hyphenated or not. (Frank this is a good point, and specifically adds to the discussion, thank you.)

Frank the reason I 'should not have been able to get such a portfolio' is because it is my belief that some of the 'Big Boys' missed this opportunity. Do not forget we are not talking in many cases here about individuals but about companies with paid researchers by the office full. I therefore think it was 'luck' that this niche got overlooked rather than rejected as a venture.

Your other point about 'Maxmind' I shall now look into. Again thank you.

Hi GPM, my understanding of Google and .info runs along the same lines as yours it would seem. Also it would seem that in the 'relatively near future' search engines will hit parked pages and mass produced mini-sites even harder than at present, and the majority of these are indeed .com and not .info.

What I would suggest people give a little thought to is what 'advantages' there are in having a group of independent related geo-websites rather than a single individual sub-domained website. Let us for arguments sake say the group is 100 in size (makes things easy when considering percentages).

The two major downsides are:

1) Renewal costs
and
2) Independant development costs

I have already pointed out the advantage with regard to 'association' between targeted visitor and the relevent site. But what about with local advertisers, how do you think they will feel when they are approached by a company that owns 95% of the US market niche and yet can offer them specifically targeted exposure to 'their projected market audience' on a specifically related named local site? What about the fact that the media constantly use the geo-description of '------ county' (or parish) in their articles and reports. This occurs on a daily basis almost nationwide. Just a few thoughts to start off this part of the discussion.

Finally, for those who may suggest that taking on such a venture is not worth it I would point out that projected turnover within three years of the sites going live is in the eight figures per annum as a group. Now that makes it worthwhile in my opinion!

@GPM

Thank you for taking the time to correct me on this -- I have always taken the story at face value, and perhaps should have known better.

That said, the other side of my argument about .info is inarguably true -- it is a spam paradise because of the massively lower barrier to entry. There is a larger amount of .com spam because there are a great many more .com names; relatively speaking the proportion of .com to .info quality sites is far weighted in favour of the former. Profitable spam is about volume, and grabbing .infos for sub$1.00 each, last I checked, costs less than grabbing .coms for $8 and up.

But again, value or perceived value of the portfolio is tangential to the project itself, which plans to create its value, rather than simply insisting it exists independently. This distinctly non-domainer attitude is actually pretty nice to see.

...I have only taken 'exception' to one poster on this thread

Yes, because there aren't many straight talkers like me. There is no way for you to make money with this project. Some of your domains were registered in late 2009. Why don't you stop talking fiction and tell us how much money you have spent in year 2009 and 2010 and what your predictions are for 2011 and 2012?

If this is a real business project, you should be able to show some numbers. Here is my guess:

2009: spent $1,500, made zero: $1,500 net loss.
2010: spent $8,500, made zero: $8,500 net loss

Predictions for year ends:
2011: will spend $13,000 including development. You will make $300: Your net loss will be $12,700.

2012: You will start downsizing. You might spend $6000. You would make $500. Your net loss will be $5,500.

In 4 years, from 2009 until end of 2012 I think you will lose $28,200 USD. Then you will finally give up. I think that is the worst business idea I have ever seen in domaining. So that's what I think.

Now, if you like you could show me your predictions and we can come back here at the end of this and next year to see who was correct.

Good luck with your project. The best thing you can do is sell all your domains and quit domaining.

And there lies the disconnect. He isn't domaining, he is developing, big difference.

The post below is one of the most relevant and informative posts I have ever seen about geo sites and I could not agree more with what JamesDavid said.

It would seem real difficult to make a site targeted locally (and keep it up to date too) on a mass scale, without having non-local content and Google ads (but maybe TheBalldOne has a way to do that successfully, and I hope he can do it and wish him well).

Anther issue is some counties are huge so they are not exactly localized. For example, in my area there are counties larger than some U.S. states, making county identity of more dubious value due to county size (in miles).

I would have to agree here... I know for a fact, that even a flawless monetization plan needs to be executed to work. Execution usually involves, time, people, and money...

Now I am sure TheBaldOne has his own plan lined up but I have to take a second to rant..

PLUS the BIGGEST thing with geo is this..
NATIONAL ADS DO NOT WORK!!!!
If you are going to put up a local geo site with Google Adsense and affiliate programs I will save you alot of time and money and energy and tell you to just close up before you start...

The reason that the local TV sales shop (Bob's TVs and more) will advertise with you is because its local... Now if next to Bob's ad is a Google Adsense Box with BestBuy.com, RadioShack.com and TigerDirect.com in it then Bob loses... you lose..

Local geos NEED to provide quality traffic, and support local business only... teeth whitening, diet pills, etc does not give off the local pride...

I have seen local site after site FAIL becuase they were more worried abotu throwing up a Google Adsense ad with some affiliate links than focusing on what counts...

I mean if you type in ANY zipcode followed by .us you will arrive at the largest geo network anywhere. covering every zipcode in the US. BUT it will never take off because it is just a parking page with useless info and Google Ads...

Not to hijack TBO's thread too much :)
(But spamminess is important for overall confidence in .info and public perceptions of developed .infos)

There are different kind of spammers. The big spammers need lots of domains and because .info is a thick registry it's much easier for the registry and the search engines to target all related domains. These days email spams have very few links to .info spam sites. Most of sites linked to are .com and a handful of country codes.

I think the $1 instead of $8 for the first year is psychological. It's really like paying in arrears rather than advance and even then it's really only domainers and webmasters that are aware of the price difference.

If the search engines can contain spam then I don't think for Joe public it's an issue because they are just not aware the spam sites are even registered. Most searches I do, even very targetted ones, don't turn up lots of spammy info's, I'm far more likely to come across spammy sites from other extensions.

.info is slowly getting everywhere - today for example I was looking for a restaurant at a local resort. They own a .co.uk but their main site is a .info

.info has amazing semantic meaning; even when people are looking to buy they invariably want information first even if it's just to check prices.

For projects like TBO's even if you could afford to acquire all the domains in another extension only a couple of TLDs would have such logical and distinctive network wide branding.

I don't dispute that -- in fact have developed many .infos around that very premise (.info really sounds good with certain keywords.)

Pointing to the existence of relatively few spammy .infos in SERPs is just another way to twist around what I said, without admitting its truth or presenting anything which disputes it. One sees relatively few .infos of any quality in the SERPs. More than say .me or .biz and certainly more than .ws but still not very many overall, of any quality. This has no bearing whatsoever on what I said.

The price of $1 vs. $8 is hardly pyschological. Spam is made on volume, domains are quick to get burned through blacklists, and a domain is merely an expendable but necessary tool in the spam toolbox. Ergo it is a smart business decision to go with the cheapest possible option. If you need some help understanding this, spend some time at some spammer forums, BHW and related venues.

Again though, all of this is pointless since it has little to no relevance to TBO's portfolio (being primarily development-focused rather than "domaining merit") and since this whole fork of the thread stems off of an offhand comment and one admittedly incorrect assertion on my part (for which I sincerely appreciate the correction.) Everyone has a pet TLD it seems; if I offended the honour of yours I apologise. :D

DavidGreen, your point about county size, with special reference here to population, is well founded. Loving County is the smallest County with circa 50 people and you can go all the way up to Los Angeles County with a population of 10 million, indeed there are circa. 30 counties with populations exceeding 1 million.

The population problem can be and is indeed inhanced by the physical size of the county, however large geographical counties have county seats and this is usually (but not always by any means) where the population is concentrated. However this will not be a problem because (generally) a county site can be subdivided into local cities, in other words Town 1, Town 2, Town 3, etc., can all be individually targetted within the site for 'some' independent pages within the site.

As for content, although I will not publish my solution for obvious reasons. (Let me assure you if I did some computer whizz-kid would have it up and running tomorrow - and that is hardly going to benefit this venture is it?) I will however expand and identify a problem not yet mentioned that I have identified and has had to be taken into account. In some counties, specifically in the southern States, there is a large Hispanic population, many of whom only speak Spanish, therefore in the counties where this occurs the sites would have to be bilingual (English and Spanish). This is no great revelation by me, I only post this as an indication that I have actually thought this through.

The point raised about the hyphens is again well made. Indeed it is for this reason that I would rather have the owners of the unhyphenated counties develop the county site than I develop the hyphenated site. Although I would obviously not directly benefit from such it would indirectly benefit the awareness of the whole group including the sites I own and develop. Again this comes back to the fact that if the .com geo-domain holders had worked together on development then this project would have been at best second-fiddle even when developed, however because the ownership of the .com's is so scattered throughout many hundreds of owners allows for this venture to jump in and take the No.1 spot, yes even above the .com's!

GPM, the likelyhood is that .info generally will increase in value at a greater percentage rate than .com over the comming years. I base this on three points:

1) The .com's are basically already registered and there is little headway above the .com's present market share it can gain apart from taking off other .com's.
2) The .info extension still has domains available to register, and with new domainers and developers constantly coming into the market offers an alternative to purchasing the .com domains on the aftermarket.
3) The number of .info domain developments is likely to rise on the back of successful .info developments occurring in the market, a type of domino effect that cannot be emulated in the .com as that is already successful.

And finally -

sdsinc - yes only 179 days - hell it doesn't seem long does it!

@Frank,

I like .info and have an interest as we are developing out some .info's but not in the numbers TBO is planning. However most of our business and our clients sites and business are in other TLDs. I also happen to believe .info's serve a useful purpose and when and if new gTLDs are released semantic meaning between the second level domain and the TLD itself will become increasingly important.

The price of $1 vs. $8 is hardly pyschological. Spam is made on volume, domains are quick to get burned through blacklists, and a domain is merely an expendable but necessary tool in the spam toolbox. Ergo it is a smart business decision to go with the cheapest possible option.

On the surface this seems a no brainer...

However....

We see quite a bit of email spam (Peaked at around 10,000 an hour) so we have access to quite a large dataset. In the old days there were a lot of .info domains referenced in the email body. (Not looking at header to/cc address field because they are invariably faked and meaningless in spam emails) Nowadays this is no longer the case.

Now there may be a number of reasons why spammers don't like .info even though they could save $7 on each purchase, my guess as I indicated above is do with the fact the Registry runs a thick registry and is very hot on the registration of large quantities of domains.

We also have access to the Zone files and the amount of domains registered for spam is mind blowing. Losing thousands of domains in a single hit is not cheap even at $1.

I suspect not as uncommon as you would think since the public may in fact be able to spell the word, may know its meaning, but has never written a dash before and also also may not realize a hyphen can be used in a domain name.

There are still lots of people who don't know the difference between an address box and a search box in a browser window.

A few observations and suggestions from someone who also holds a large and somewhat unconventional geo domain portfolio:

- Dropping half (or more) of the lowest quality domains (dashes, smallest populations, fewest exact match searches, etc.) will cut your carry costs in half and not significantly impact your revenue. It's the old 80/20 rule.

- The economies of scale are interesting but complex. 300 sites earning $1 a day is a full time salary (> $100k gross revenue per year). But spending even just 8 hours of development, content creation time and SEO on each of those 300 sites is 2400 hours of labor which is more than most people work in a year. Minutes per site turn in to days.

- Direct advertising becomes really interesting for local sites and could, in theory, very easily get you that $1 a day per site (and potentially significantly more). Get one direct advertising deal for $30 a month and the site is now generating a $1 a day. But if you have 300 sites, you need to close 300 such deals. That means self service and mass marketing techniques are likely going to be required or you will spend a tremendous amount of time dealing with your advertisers. The problem is that self service and mass marketing are almost completely counter to "going local".

- You said originally (and haven't really discussed it since), that you were initially focused on a single ccTLD domain and that you plan to market that domain across your network of sites. A. that's a good way to get your great site banned. B. why put all that effort into a ccTLD in the US? I mean, you have all these US counties... the most relevant extension in the US is .COM (and that's coming from someone who owns 200+ .US domains). Seems like poor planing.

- Launch with something manageable. Figure out something local, the county where you live or the one next door, a couple of the names that you have that are the best/highest searched, heck, even a particular state, whatever you think makes sense - and launch just those sites in your first wave. Iterating on a dozen counties is far, far easier than iterating on 500. A classic example of this is that Bruce Marler owned 25 State .ME's but he launched with Missouri.me because he lived there... because he lived there he was much more successful than if he hadn't been there and that gave him the foundation and the funds to expand to other states.

I don't recall ever searching for anything to do with the county that wasn't school, library, property tax, sales tax, recreation center, driver's license, car tags, water, sports leaque, etc. related. (Others would be court, voting, fire, police, jail, gas, waste disposal, recycling, eletric, sewer, building permit, inspections, etc.)

It seems to me that your only viable monetization strategy would be to try to rank for those terms to become a "gateway" to all things county related and hope to get enough traffic to entice a business in that county into buying a banner ad and hope that some visitors will also click on adsense while passing through.

Each topic would of course first take you to an intermediate page that would have ads relevant to that category:
Driver's license and car tags: car insurance (this would be your big one).
Property tax: Homeowner's insurance, home repair, etc.
Jail and Court: bailbondsmen, attorneys.
Police: burglar alarms, security sytems, even bike locks etc.
School: tutoring, SAT prep, football equipment, etc.
County soccer leaque: soccer equipment, soccer coaching, sports training, sports medicine, etc.)
Etc.

If people conveniently found one county related service uning countyname.info, some would try it next time when looking for a diff. county service.

You were able to acquire the names because no-one else saw value there. I could see the above approach working if you vere a developer or were able to team up with developer/s. I think that if you wrote up a good case for it, you would find developers, there has to be someone hungry somewhere in the world in this economy.
Good luck!

I am kinda late to discussion, but I'll share my thoughts. Please keep in mind I make for living from "website monetization", and I have lots of .infos, some generic words, and some "developed" .info sites. Try to take my advice seriously.

I dont see how you can make profit with your portfolio.

- If you try to sell it, you probably wouldnt get higher offer then $20. I personally wouldnt take them for free. Why to bother with something I cant resell or make profit?

- Automated Development. You have 1194 domains there? Thats more then $8500 renewal fee per year. Its almost impossible to make that money with 1194 auto created info sites.

- Manual development. You cant develop them all manually. And if you could, you probably wont be able to make $8500 from, for example, adsense. why? you cant quality develop 1200 sites by yourself. It would take years for that, and renewal fees would grow. If you pay someone to do that for you, your costs will grove much higher then $8500. You want be able to cover that with adsense revenue.

- Real development. You can develop any of those into real, local related website, with ads to local shops, bars, real estate, etc. But it would take you 2 lifetimes to do that with 1200 sites. And 1200 local employees to maintain those sites. Development costs? Much to high for 1200 sites.
