I hope the following will be good news for those who have invested in .info.

Background

About two years ago I managed to register a ccTLD domain, the development use of the domain was obvious and involved the production of a major Geo-site/sites. Immediately I started work on researching the subject matter and formulating a business plan. It was during the business plan evaluation that I realised that my reach to the US market would be weak without spending a fortune in marketing and advertising. Unfortunately, not having won the lottery, the projected horrendous cost getting into the largest national market would be too great for me to proceed.

Then about 18 months ago luck struck (no I didn't win the lottery) I saw some US geo.info domains for sale, a quick few checks such as Google search stats, comparrison of .info and .com values in the aftermarket (ignoring the 'dreamers'), etc., it seemed that I could utilize these domains to get a very tiny finger tip hold in the US market. I therefore immediately purchased the domains and started hunting out more in the same niche. Ever since that first purchase I have checked daily for drops (when my epilepsy would permit) and even purchased some on the aftermarket!

Today

I now have a portfolio that covers over 1,760 US Counties, Parishies, Boroughs, and Independent Cities with populations of 20,000+, this represents approx. 97% of the total niche! What of perhaps the most important statistic available, Google 'local' exact searches? For these domains Google totals circa. 3 million per month, so that will equate to about 4 million searches a month in total accross the search engines. This definately shows people are 'associating' with their counties, etc., even though there is little in the way of developed sites to find.

Let's face it folks, I should never have been able to accumulate this portfolio, and its creation has been more by luck than anything else. It should also be taken into account that 'IF' the geo-domain .com owners had got their act together and actually co-operated together, then this portfolio and the resulting opportunity for mass development would always at best have been second fiddle.

Development

I have tried to obtain the services of a 'developer', offering a 60% share of the gross revenue for development and continued running of the proposed websites, unfortunately to no avail. I therefore have no option but to develop these myself, that means they will be nowhere as good as they should be and is therefore in reality an unfortunate waste of potential, but I have no realistic alternative.


So what is the upshot of all of this?

1) I have now stopped 'domaining'. From here on in I am just going to liquidate what domains I have that are not associated with the development plans.

2) I will not make the mistakes Marchex made with their 'Zip Code' website portfolio fiasco. Only a fool does not learn by another's mistakes.

3) I will utilize this portfolio to enable and support the development of the single ccTLD domain into an internationally recognised Geo-based site.

4) I will welcome contact from those .info domain owners who either own the unhyphenated domain where I own the hyphenated, or more especially from those who own any of the relevent 15 domains where I own neither (hyphenated or unhyphenated). My hope would be that we can work together.

I understand what you are saying here, BUT as someone who has spent time and money developing a County Website I KNOW that people want and NEED to feel the local presence..

For example if I walked into a local business and told them they could advertise on County.org I wouldnt make a connection because why would Bill's Dry Cleaning in Livingston County want to advertise on the Livingston County page of County.org.....

BUT if I walked into his store and told him about LivingstonCounty.info and how he could get the competitive edge by advertising on this locally owned and operated website he would be more likely to see the value....

If he wanted to advertise on a large scale website where his ad would be rarely seen or searched he could go to http://local.yahoo.com/ and blow his money there...

Right, all I can do is assure you that the monetization will not be a problem, that may sound strange to some, but I am hardly going to disclose the details on here or the other forum. One thing is for sure I will not 'run' live test sites, the site template will be run offline and will be vigorously tested. No doubt a few little quirks will get through but nothing major it is hoped.

The point 'JamesDavid' makes is what some people are missing. This is dealing with real people and how 'they' think. I call it 'association', in psychology it is sometimes referred to as 'tribalism' I think. It is this aspect that makes the site names crucial to this type of development. Further more by having such a portfolio then this association between visitor and site is actually enhanced, it becomes the visitors 'local site', even though it is part of a huge portfolio of sites. That is a tremendous advantage to acquire for less than $8 a year per site.

I am getting a bit deep here and I have had to go over this post several times to erase certain points that it would be silly of me to mention publicly at the moment. But what I can and will say is that perhaps domainers should look at the real world a little more, for the internet is now part of that real world, unfortunately many seem to think the real world is actually part of the internet.

In the real estate world where I have some experience, it was common for a developer to build out all the infrastructure of a subdivision, roads, sewer, water, power, etc. and then go broke when home sales didn't ramp up as fast or as profitably as projected. Much safer to build one or two homes at a time even if it was less efficient.

I'm still thinking through the implications for my own sites, but this morning I found wprobot.net and cc.wprobot.net. At first glance it looks like you could put an autoblog on all your sites and manage them from a single backend.

Personally I have avoided autoblogs and write my own content, but with tools like this on the market I am starting to wonder. Not excited about getting banned by G or EPN though.

I do understand about your comparrisons with real estate and builders going bankrupt, but that is one of the beauties of the internet, costs when managed can be extremely low and well controlled.

As someone who went bankrupt doing real estate that is a fact I know and love. I still attend a monthly meeting with some of my friends from the old days and I am astonished at the amount of money they put at risk to do a deal. I sit there thinking that if a website makes $10 per year I break even.

Even in a room full of experienced and knowledgeable investors only one or two understand the power of $1 or $2 per day.

I would have to agree here... I know for a fact, that even a flawless monetization plan needs to be executed to work. Execution usually involves, time, people, and money...

Now I am sure TheBaldOne has his own plan lined up but I have to take a second to rant..

PLUS the BIGGEST thing with geo is this..
NATIONAL ADS DO NOT WORK!!!!
If you are going to put up a local geo site with Google Adsense and affiliate programs I will save you alot of time and money and energy and tell you to just close up before you start...

The reason that the local TV sales shop (Bob's TVs and more) will advertise with you is because its local... Now if next to Bob's ad is a Google Adsense Box with BestBuy.com, RadioShack.com and TigerDirect.com in it then Bob loses... you lose..

Local geos NEED to provide quality traffic, and support local business only... teeth whitening, diet pills, etc does not give off the local pride...

I have seen local site after site FAIL becuase they were more worried abotu throwing up a Google Adsense ad with some affiliate links than focusing on what counts...

I mean if you type in ANY zipcode followed by .us you will arrive at the largest geo network anywhere. covering every zipcode in the US. BUT it will never take off because it is just a parking page with useless info and Google Ads...

Hi Krosset, unfortunately everything is out of my own pocket!

It is one of those weird things in life, you can have a great idea but many people do not see it until 'after' it has proven itself (or failed of course). I have never even contemplated getting a 'backer' - that is if you ignor our attempts on the lottery on Saturday nights.

hmm the renewals would definitely hurt if you dont have deep pockets.

But keeping that aside, do keep a budget and time constraint on your project.

Also, keep a "second in command" in case you are temporarily indisposed. I have made the mistake of being a one man army and my projects usually fell apart as everything depended on me, which is generally a bad idea. When I say get somebody on your side, I don't mean developers etc, but someone closer who would handle the project with the same commitment as you would yourself.
One final thing is the Timeline. Projects fall apart for the wont of timing and constraints. The longer you stretch a project, the more of a burden it becomes (specially long term ones without time boundaries)

ALSO, keep up with those joomla books mate. No matter how many coders you get, there will be a time you would feel they are letting you down, and the only thing to overcome that would be that you yourself know whats going into your scripts.

I think you have lost a lot of money and you will lose much more. You will never make money with these domains. You will never catch up with the renewal fees. Just let all the domains drop.

No matter what business you are in, you need to think about the return of investment. Investors usually aim for getting their money back in two years. However with your portfolio I don't see this happening at all. You wouldn't get your money back in 2, 5 or 10 years. On the contrary you will keep losing 10 grand a year.

You might have spend $10.000 for those 1194 domains, but if you were to sell the whole package I wouldn't spend $10 for them. If you offered those domains to me for free, I wouldn't want them.

It is sometimes tough to admit you made a bad choice. However you need to cut your loses at some point. The dream is to live off of the Internet but that's not going to happen with this project. You are a family man and you have important things to think about in life. This project is a total failure.

Krossat, your point about a 'time boundary' on any project is a very valid point. The very reason I went 'public' at this stage rather than keep holding back so as to perhaps achieve even greater penetration is because 'time' has to be taken into account.

I can say that within the next 180 days it is my intention to have at least the majority of the sites live and fully functioning. Anything over this period would not be a 'failure' but would definately be outside what is planned.

Erdinc, thank you for your 'great analysis', it is so evident that you have researched the subject deeply. Of all the posts here and on the other forum I must say yours is the only one that has irritated me at all, and I guess that is because you not only question 'why' I started this thread but then proceed to come up with your inane answer that it was 'to get some approval for the very bad investment you made'!

I, however, will give you some of the reasons I started this thread (and similarly on the other forum as well), and they are many which together are cummulative and propelled me post.

- This is a community where ideas and experiences are shared by its members
- That, IMO, this is an important announcement for the .info investors to be made aware of, as if it is successful the awareness of .info in the US market will increase and therefore affect the value of both .info domain names and websites
- I announce publicly my intentions at this time so that others with similar ideas are made aware of my actions and we can possibly work together (something that geo domainers have talked about doing for years but never seems to come to fruition)
- By announcing my intentions and plans put the whole thing in the public domain for discussion and give a starting point historically to the development

The above are just some of many aspects as to why I started this thread. Erdinc you may well require false praise in your life, I though definately do not.

I don't always agree with Erdinc but he makes good points. It is easy to see the portfolio as a liability because of the upkeep cost and it's not making money. If you had to liquidate the names now, you'd probably fetch almost nothing. To put it bluntly, these names don't really have built-in value. You have no choice but to develop.

If you came here with one quality domain instead thousand worthless names, you would have done a much better job. Firstly you would have spent your money on something you can sell and immediately get your money back. Secondly a single top quality domain will cost you $8 a year to keep instead $10.000.

You just know how to register worthless domains. You are not an entrepreneur. You are a dreamer. You will do nothing but lose more money.

The level of competition on the Internet is very high. Majority of people like you lose money and quit. If 10 people have posted a message in this topic at least 6 of them lose money. If 200 people have viewed this topic, 140 of them lose money.

Most of the domainers lose money. You are one of them and I think you are the worst I have ever seen. There was a guy a while ago here at at namepros who registered 300 worthless domains and came here asking which ones he should drop.

Sometimes people come here saying they can't do domaining anymore because they can't handle the pressure. Some people have family problems. The stress effects their family life.

If you had spend that amount of money on something meaningful like a cityname.com, there would be no regret, no stress, no dreaming.

If you have a deep pocket and are going to brand them offline then it may work other wise if you think you will do it thru SE your got a lot of hard work in front of you even if you have deeeeeep pockets..

Hi Ezimedia, I guess the answer to your major point about gaining traffic to the sites is as follows:

1) SEO is the bedrock, and yes that is a damn hard route, but with absolutely rock solid content and freshness of content is achievable. Now it may be that it will drive me insane working on so much SEO (though some would obviously say I am there already), but with circa 4 million searches a month it will be worth it.

- I should also add here that these domains do get some type in traffic as well, hopefully the content and 'novelty' of finding a relevent site will spark a small viral response and therefore local traffic will grow from this as well.

2) Point '1' above will be supplemented with use of local marketing (note here I do not say 'advertsing'). Marketing the sites will be to the local residents and businesses, and done in such a way that will allow the opportunity in each instance for the local residents to become aware of their relevent site. Again a lot of hard work is involved, but surprisingly little cost.

3) Where necessary advertising may be used to suppliment the above, though this will be targetted offline advertising.

4) Press releases aimed at local, State, and National level marketing will be done. Yes, here is perhaps the weakest part of the strategy, however, with a trick or two up my sleave I should at least be able to create a little success.

That seems very over the top. Putting $20,000 per year into an investment really isn't that big of deal for many people. Especially when he can stop at any time with no additional downside.
