Was holding back on posting this thread, but after waiting and waiting for 1 whole month I’ve decided that enough is enough.

I have gone through a horrific ordeal thanks to Afternic’s recklessness, incompetence and/or deliberate harassment. I can’t seem to pin it down exactly as to which one it is out of these. Or perhaps, it’s a mixture of all of these three elements combined.

I sold a domain on the 8th of April this year. It was a lease to own sale spread out over 12 months. Per the deal, Afternic is supposed to schedule a payout on the 21st of each month (after a 12-days gap).

Fast forward to October 21, and Afternic failed to pay me on time. I enquired on the 24th and a rep told me it was due to an error.

I had made a slight address correction, and updated the address on 24th October itself (a bit late admittedly). However, Afternic’s backend is so buggy they could not verify the update even though I’d fulfilled all the steps required.

Then I had to contact a rep once again on the 25th and he told me that “I need to update again until all the dots are green.” I promptly updated the address AGAIN and waited for a few more days.

A few more days passed, and I contacted the same rep again and he told me the funds should be sent within a few days and that “everything looks fine at his end”.

Early November came and the funds still could not be sent for some strange reason. This time around, I mailed Afternic’s TA, and was met with stone cold silence.

After repeatedly emailing Afternic's various email aliases (Service, TA) and messaging Namepros GD rep @GoDaddy , I finally received a partial payout on the 7th of November. Yes, a partial payout!

The mode of payment and/or payer address was different this time around so I could not verify whether it was Afternic or some other business entity. I enquired again and as usual, Afternic reps took 3-4 days to even verify that a payout was indeed sent.

However, there’s another twist in this fiasco.

Whomever pushed the funds on the 7th of November, either hurriedly or deliberately deducted another 15% commission off of the payout, that is, they sent a partial payout.

In totality, Afternic deducted a 30% commission off of the monthly payout in October.

Absolutely disgusted by now, I enquired again with Afternic and shared evidence depicting that I have only received a partial payout.

A couple days ago, I received an email from another rep acknowledging the deduction. However, he said that it was due to some obscure fee being levied by their payment provider for 2 “rejections”.

Per my conversations with various Afternic reps, on record, as far as I can glean down the rabbit hole of email troves, there was ONLY one rejection. Again, I am not sure if they are making this up out of thin air or it was indeed a hidden fee.

What’s tragic and utterly ridiculous is November’s payout is already due now and they are doing the SAME thing again. Very (un)professional behaviour.

I didn't receive the “It’s happening: Payout’s on the way” email from Afternic on 21 November. Upon checking the "Leased" section, it shows an error. Sigh.

We are talking about a multi billion dollar company that cannot even release funds on time and botch up simple payouts time and time again.

Am sure some folks over here have gone through similar ordeals or ordeals of a different nature at the hands of Afternic’s 20th Century backend tech and ultra-slow 1-star customer support.

Afternic’s current functioning is worse than an arrogant and archaic government bureaucracy neck deep in red-tapism with a sloth-like redressal mechanism.

Also, as I have pointed out before in the official Afternic thread, they randomly assign multiple support staff members to address the same problem per customer.

This logic-defying rotational gimmick is another reason why Afternic’s support is sub-par and misaligned.

I really don’t know what will prompt Afternic to act quickly and acknowledge their mistake. I just want them to expedite transfer of the remainder of the funds.

Mind you, folks, is this how a bonafide billion-dollar organisation functions? Are they even a serious company anymore?

Going by their nonchalance and utter disregard for sellers based on my readings on X and Namepros, it seems it is going to get bad for EVERY domain investor/seller in the long-term.

"Just because you’re not bitten today doesn’t mean that you won’t be bit tomorrow."

My question for everyone is:

Does Afternic's payment provider levy a hidden fee when, for whatever reason, the payment is declined by your bank?

My Conclusion

After the inglorious and unwarranted DAN integration, Afternic is literally unusable, chronically buggy, and replete with ultra-slow support that needs to be clued in every time a follow up conversation is required.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The closure of "DAN" is a disaster for the domain name community. Of course, I won't use "AF" again, the experience is really terrible.

This really good to know. I just decided to list my portfolio and have been pushing them from Dynadot. We are going to kill those listings until we hear about a satisfactory resolution in this thread. Best of luck getting this resolved!

Hi @Kazama San,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We've looked into the situation, and here's what we found:

Regarding your Lease to Own sale, as you noted, payouts are scheduled for the 21st of each month. In October, there was a delay because your account details needed updating.

Once your information was successfully updated, our system automatically attempted to resend your payment. Each time a payment attempt was rejected due to mismatched details, our payment provider charges a fee, as outlined in our terms of service. These rejection fees are outlined here. To clarify, there are no hidden fees or additional commissions applied.

Your most recent payout has been completed, and you're now set to receive your payments on schedule, on the 21st of each month. We'll connect with Afternic's support team to take a look at what advice you were given, and whether the team could've done anything differently.

If you have any questions in the future about this transaction, Afternic's support team is always on hand to help through live chat at afternic.com/contact.

@GoDaddy I can confirm that Afternic finally initiated the payout on the 25th of November. I've received the funds now. Here's hoping Afternic sorts out their backend tech and First Response Time. :)
