In this month's Fortune magazine, on the cover is Bill Gates. It is the top story for this month. Mostly it goes on to say that Microsoft has missed out on a lot of products/services, but will come out on top. Such as an digital music player (iPod) and a search engine (Google). Bill Gates claims that Google is just another Netscape. Bill Gates says, "once Microsoft is done with MSN search, people will look back at the way we googled for things and laugh."

Do you think Microsoft will come out on top like it has before? Personally, I don't know what to think. This is going to be one of the biggest battles between tech companies that we have seen in a while. The result can only lead to better products/services for the consumer.

I would honestly love to see microsoft try and fail to beat out google search, just so we can all see bill gates cry like a little girl. I think MSN is a bit far behind in the search game to catch up to google.

I would personally like to see MSN beat Google, since many of my sites ranks very good on MSN right now... :)

But it will be interesting to see what Mr. Gates does to promote MSN in the future..

I agree. The phrase "google it" has become habit to a lot of people. If MSN was going to have ANY chance to beat google they would have had to start this months ago.

I think that Google is doomed to loose in the long run...

How can you compete with a search engine builtin into the most popular operating system, browser and instant messenger service? MSN is also a pretty big portal. There's also hotmail that can be a search entry point and it is so much bigger than gmail it isn't even funny.

You upgrade MSN now, and it installed the MSN Search bar...

There's also the fact that Google isn't more revelant in his SERP than the new MSN. Google came out years ago with a better infrastructure that gave him a huge spidering power, he puts a lots of emphasis on inbound link and that made a lot of sense, so he was really superior. Smart and simple design and the love story with the tech community began... Everyone working in the tech industry recommend google here and there...

But the game did change, people are now aware of the links tricks and Google needs to put more and more emphasis on semantic analysys, and he isn't better at that than the new Yahoo or MSN technology. Smaller search engine like AskJeeves is as revelant as google as we speak..

Google isn't the same since the Florida update, and he'll need to wakeup because his stock will take about 150 years before it is worth the same in real money that it is worth on the stock market and his biggest competitor got all kind of search entry point in about anybodys machine.

Google will continue to be a major player but his market share will be taken over by msn and yahoo and it will probably end up Google (35%), MSN(45%) and Yahoo(20%)

Cheers,
Matt

I am inclined to agree with Dotsavenue. MSN will probably integrate their search into the next version of thier OS which I am sure 99% of people using windows will eventually upgrade to. At that point search will be part of everyones PC effectively reducing the need for google(and google-esq search engines).

I agree that maybe MSN is gaining an advantage since it will start to be integrated in the OS but I donยดt see it surpassing google any time soon.
I mean, yahoo also has one of the biggest portals on the internet and google still beats it for search.
One thing I agree on is that if Google wants to stay on top itยดs going to have to start thinking of a way to better filter out unethical SEOยดs and spam sites because lately searching for anything on google becomes a hassle because you have to filter out results from thousands of spam sites.
Also , for some reason my sites rank much better on yahoo and MSN than on google...I think yahoo and msn spider sites much more frequently than google and that might be the reason.I am seeing lots of visits from both bots every week.

In my opinion MSN is more of a threat to yahoo than google. Why ? This is an example of a pay per click monthly spend for two different sites I have run

- Travel insurance
Overture (aka yahoo) - ยฃ 4000 / month
Espotting (direct sites and other engines) - ยฃ6000 / month
Google - ยฃ 800 / month

- Dedicated hosting
Google - ยฃ 4800/month
Espotting + Overture - ยฃ 1000/month combined

From what I am seeing google is fequented by high tech users, wether it be a true tech, someone at school/college/uni or somone staunch anti MS. However I see the average person booking their flight/insurance/banking online etc goes for whatever is advertised and known, or easy to them, hence alot of our traffic on our family brands go to Yahoo/MSN.

Something to think about :)

I think DotsAvenue hit it on the head for the most part.

for me, I am liking msn more and more each day. the search results on msn are just so much more relevant than googles "slam 'em with what we go" format.

yes, the above post and the post by DotsAvenue pretty much sum up the advantge that MSN has.
I know people who are now in the habit of typing in MSN.co.uk instead of google.com.
Plus, as already mentioned it is built in to OS etc.

I think that google will win, why? What makes google so succesfull ? The company;s imagination, their ability to inovate and launch new products and services , see Froogle, see google desktop and others

I think MSN still has a good chance with Google, they can promote their search engine through ways that nearly everyone can see it, i.e integrating it into the browser in the next Windows update.

Overall, I think MSN's design is much better than Google's but Google IMO has better search results, If Google doesn't find what you need theres always MSN ;)

There will never be a winner. Google will be ahead for a while, then MSN will adapt newer technology and be ahead for a while, then Google or another competitor will come out ahead again. The industry will continue to play leap-frog as long as there is more than one player in the game.

MSN will dominate Google in the webmaster world. MSN really knows how to rank pages correctly according to keyword, relavency, and most importantly: site content!

However, Google has already won the interest of the public. I mean...look at almost all of the schools in the US. They all prefer and recommend Google.

Student: "What's the capital of Iowa?"
Teacher: "Hmm...find that yourself. Go look it up on Google."

I like MSN search results better for keyword search.. but Google still has the edge, IMO, when it's time to type-in a sentences, a question, or something long..
