In this month's Fortune magazine, on the cover is Bill Gates. It is the top story for this month. Mostly it goes on to say that Microsoft has missed out on a lot of products/services, but will come out on top. Such as an digital music player (iPod) and a search engine (Google). Bill Gates claims that Google is just another Netscape. Bill Gates says, "once Microsoft is done with MSN search, people will look back at the way we googled for things and laugh."

Do you think Microsoft will come out on top like it has before? Personally, I don't know what to think. This is going to be one of the biggest battles between tech companies that we have seen in a while. The result can only lead to better products/services for the consumer.

IMHO google is bigger now but could easily go down... microsoft has more money

no one knows exactly what will happen

You forget that MS has masses of money to back this, and if they want they can pour billions into it, which is something that Google does not have. MS can drown google with cash if they think its worth it (IMO it is).
having the world leading SE is a MASSIVE advantage, just think of all of the services that you can offer if you owned it.
This is IMO where google has gone wrong. WHY have they not exploited their position by offering web services such as webhosting, email hosting, a web browser with their own serach in it?
All of this things could have mulitplied Googles revenues by over 10 times, leaving them in a much more financially strong position. This IMO is why MSN has been investing billions into MSN search, because they plan to exploit the position.

Yes that is also true too but MSN also has the advantage because on all new computers loaded with XP they conveintly put msn.com as the homepage by default and any new computer user wouldn't know how to change it thus leading to more traffic to MSN and microsoft.

End users are a factor as well. Most people already trust MS with the info on their PC reluctantlly. Would they also trust MS with the largest "application" on the web? Personally, I like a little diversity.

Nothing is forever. Google is on top now, but does anyone remember when these names were in the running: AltaVista, Hotbot, Lycos, Excite, etc. Altavista used to be my favorite before Google showed up.

There's no guarantee MS can catch up either, although they do have the financial backing to pretty much do what they want. Most people think they are always number one, but that's not the case. MS Money is a small player behind Quicken, IIS is a small player compared to Apache as a web server, They still don't domininate in Web server O/S market compared to Linux, Dreamweaver has eclipsed FrontPage as the web desinger of choice, and they've never done well with an imaging software. I don't see MSN becoming the premier search engine any time soon.

tell that to xbox ;)

What If microsoft just said, ok on the next windows release EVERY person that updates' homepage is now ms.com's search not google or any other se, would that be illegal? Or what do you think would happen. Discuss.

MS has NEVER been much of an innovator. They are just the best at copying and making it better. If someone is making money...MS finds a way to get into the market and eventually dominate. imho google results are getting worse and worse...much less relevant...sometimes I go through many result pages to get what I want. I am starting to wonder why I bother.

Ie7

Yeah I read in PC Mag that now since Firefox, Netscape, and Opera are giving IE so much trouble they are going to be releasing the IE7 that wasn't supposed to come out until Longhorn. They said hopefully betas will be out summer and the full version should be out by end of the year. It is used with SP2 and it will also have tabbing features like firefox and opera. They are also stating that it will be less prone to malware and hijack attempts. Something about Microsoft creating a safe proof idea makes me laugh. Anyone have any ideas on this? Just in response to the last talk about them controlling everything!

hahahahahahahahahahahaha... thats the biggest load of, well you get the jist!

I HATE MSN.... I hate hotmail - the web based email thing is slow, and clunky. It is really annoying. I don't like MSN search. You don't get half the results you get on google. The only reason I use MSN is because I have got into the habit of searching from my MSIE address bar. I can't figure out how to change it to google search. I don't even like MSN Messenger, but I want to beable to chat to my friends and business associates. On the other hand, google mail is amazing. They need to bring out a Google Messenger (Gessenger or something). I would definitely use it. At least Google give pop3 settings so now I can get my emails on my phone.

The only thing with google is that its software seems to be search based. OK, it is a search engine - but, it needs to bring out some useful software. Anti spyware and the suchlike.

Google OS - How cool! We can only hope!

Anyway... google all the way!

google has the edge imo....

unless MSN does some drastic changes...change Hotmail's layout...give it simplicity...
more space..etc....

Sometime, I wonder why's all the focus on those text ads, and those empty design.

To me hotmail is simple (even if I dont use it), more space would be good. But thats not because gmail have a better mailing technology than hotmail that it is a more powerfull marketing tool. Hotmail mailboxes outnumbers GMail boxes by a googol, and that really is the only things that matters.

Also, to me image & flash banner looks way more attracting than those damn ugly, and boring adwords.

Edit: Yeah, 500 posts.

MSN vs Google

I just want to point this out to the fourm..and see what people think...

The way I see, MSN with explorer could have an edge if they use the ADDRESS typin information...(database of who is typing what address and which domain address with extension is used more...). Because the purest way of finding out who is going where is by knowing who is typing what in MSN Explorer

What do you guys think..? Agree or not....Google does not have this info, Overture does not have this...they can only tell us which keywords or keywords with extension are being searched for but not direct typein in the address bar ...only MSN or a browser can tell us that...

I agree, hopefully it won't raise any security issues if they decide to go that route.

i found that msn search is doing more aggressive crawling than google.
my sites are listed in msn way faster than in google.

I think a lot of people would object to this. Microsoft need to be very cautious when collecting personal data from people. Also, by collecting this data it won't tell them much either. Search engines don't want to show what people are typing in to their browsers - they want to show what people search for. They need to show the best sites for their search, not the most popular sites.

I hope I have explained well! :)
