MS Office 07 vs Open Office

Just got a new laptop and was thinking about putting Open Office on it because I didn't really want to pay a lot for MS Office. I'm a student and I'm poor. I saw this offer at uni which allows students and academics to buy MS Office Ultimate 2007 for $75. Probably to stop piracy or something.

Is MS Office 07 a superior product to Open Office? Don't mind spending $75 if it is a lot better.

Open office is a bit slower compared to MS office but unless you really need to, just stick with open office.

I have yet to find something I need to do that I can only do with MS Office.

I use open office, and have no complaints.

Same here. It does everything I need it to do for documents and spreadsheets, and Impress, its PowerPoint alternative, is worth taking a look at. :)

I'm a MS Office user myself. Had Open Office for a while and didn't like it.

Open Office is just as good IMO & best of all, it's free!

I love Open Office. I won't touch MS Office ever again. Give it a shot. It's free, you can't go wrong with that! :kickass:

They're on two different levels, I use open office all the time, but Office is far more powerful

I would have to with MS Office if you got the cash. Open Office is a great alternative though.

Like I said before, I am a fan of OOo, but I'd take a look at that offer seriously if you have the cash.

* Access 2007
* Accounting Express 2008
* Excel 2007
* InfoPath 2007
* Groove 2007
* OneNote 2007
* Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager
* PowerPoint 2007
* Publisher 2007
* Word 2007

Get it. You can always Install OO after :)

What can you do in Office that you can't in OpenOffice? Apart from insert Word Art, and have a useful image cropping tool.

If cash is really an issue - and I say this as a college student myself - then go with Open Office. As far as basic functionality, you have everything you need and I used it often on my laptop until I was able to secure a copy of Office 2003. However, if $75 is not really a big deal for you, I personally prefer Office 2007.

Thanks for all the replies guys. From your advice I went for Office 07 and I am really impressed. I really like the new interface. I don't think I would pay over a grand for it tho.

I agree, it's not worth over a grand. But heck, the interface is awesome! I've been using 2007 for a long time now and the interface just continues to get better and better. ;)
