i saw a few people registring movie domains, years before the movie would be released. Is it a good idea?

Like would they be getting huge traffic after the movie is released?

Likely they'll get traffic, all right. But you'd better come up with a really good
believable BS as to how you came up with the idea of regging it without any
hint whatsoever of the movie.

Also, unless the movie ends up being a cult classic(like star wars or something), the traffic is sure to drop off very quickly after it's been out for a while.

Putting aside trademark/copyright issues, a slow buildup until release time, a spike while its showing and a decline after the event. Depending on its popularity, a possible baseline of traffic after that. If it bombs badly, so will your traffic in all likelihood, unless you can capture the naysayers.

Better to invest in generic movie domains IMO... I have scififilms.info for example.. more flexibility and longevity. Plus many studios have sites appended to the studio domain these days..

Aren't film titles trademarks? It would be very easy to think of a film very likely to get a sequel, then just register the name and add a 2 to it. However, once the film is being released, TM rules come into play I guess?

I'd agree about generic film domains being better than a movie title. Generic domains keep their value, unlike titles who are out of the spotlights once the film has passed the moment of hype.
