Moniker is Rigged.

I cannot believe that every register in the universe is rigged with tasters including Moniker dot com. These guys are just taking all the good names I wanted to register. I was going through a bunch of names at moniker about 8 hours ago to see if its available and sure enough it was. There is no way in the world this could have been a coincidence because 2 of the domain names I wanted to register was registered in less than 8 hours. That never happened with me before. I mean I have better luck winning the $330 million ticket from Mega Lottery last night compare to loosing out on 2 domain names in less than 10 hours. I am sick of it because I did a very extensive research obtaining these names and it all came to nothing. I just started using moniker a couple of days ago because people were saying that they never lost a name there from just looking it up. Well today I can prove them wrong. I made a list of registrars I've used in the past in which some of the names I wanted to register were taken from me.

1) Namecheap
2) Moniker
3) Whois.ws

There are rumors that this information is being obtained at and sold directly at the verisign registry which bypasses all and any registrars.

I've just read it and I hope they fix this mess up. However, as long as there are money pouring in from the tasters this practice is never going to stop and registrars will just look the other way because they are getting paid no matter what.

How many times are people going to post the same thing without learning any lessons from one another? Whether or not the registrars or others are watching and then selling/registering domain searches it is your own personal responsibility to register that great domain you found before someone else does. Otherwise - you find it available you register it right there and then and this problem would never arise.

To the OP I'm not saying that to be mean only as an observation.

If you are unsure that great domain is the next million dollar domain or not, get it at a registrar where you can do domain tasting. Play the same game as the registrars.

What I'm saying is that I've spent countless hours researching about the name I wanted to register and by checking its availability only once in particular registrars, a taster registered it in a matter of minutes and making my effort worthless.

Same here, i don't want to step on your toes or anything but you should take a different approach doing your research.
Make the list and then enter a domain into your browser, if it doesn't resolve put in on your "potential reg list" then when you're done creating that list, decide which ones appeal the most to you (OVT - KeywordDiscovery search counts, etc) without doing a WHOIS check.

Then when you have filtered down go to Moniker and do a multiple domain check and register what is truly available then.

And only check domains when you're ready to register right there and then.

I had this happen to me at Moniker about 2 weeks ago. The name was regged and then dropped a couple days later. Keep checking for availability.

I learned my lesson the hard way as well. It didn't take me long to figure out exactly what Damion suggested above.

I now place potential names in browser, and if it can't be found, I compile a list, go to registrar and register the ones I want if they are available.

I haven't figured out a better way to do it. Maybe somebody else has.

But like Whitebark suggested, play the same game, especially at Moniker you are given the exact tools to "taste"..

Just register the domains you want, park them right away to see if there is some traffic and after 4 days you can drop the useless ones.

You only pay a 25 cent "restocking fee"

If what you say was true, why do your research with them? Look up your names elsewhere, don't use any of the biggies. When you find one you want, and are ready to register, then go to Moniker, or whoever, and reg it.
I really don't think that is the case, read about Namecheap.com, above, etc.

Exactlly, ... I have never had a probelm with moniker.

I use Domain Name Analyzer (been using it for months) and have never ever had a problem. I understand some say you can get spyware from programs like this, and lose your names that way, but I have not experienced this myself.

Unfortunately that doesn't always work. If the nameservers aren't set or there is a problem, it may not resolve. deity.com is an example.

I use Moniker to check for availability primarily because I've been informed that they do not 'Sniff' domains from searches. I admit that I did lose a domain once that I searched for at Moniker, but that was probably pure coincidence. I have checked for thousands of other names there without problems.

When using other registrars, such as GoDaddy, I always ensure that I'm ready to buy the domain immediately.

Yeah, i know, sometimes the names are registered even if Firefox gives you a Server Not Found message, but that's why you put it on your "potential reg" list to eventually check them all in one go at Moniker.

It's not a fail safe way to know a domain is registered or not, checking it in your browser, but that really doesn't matter as you're bulk checking them and regging them afterwards immediately.

It works with a small number of domains but if you're doing a lot of them you maybe doing a lot of work for nothing...if you do extensive research prior to buying the domains.

Personally that is what i would do, if you have your eye on a couple of domains and want to see if they are available check it in your browser then if they're not resolving do some research if your buying is based on certain criteria and if not and you have a good feeling about them you can bulk check and reg when you have your creditcard in hand.

It all boils down to registering the domain right away when you get the idea to register and not hours or minutes later, you need to know if you're registering or not right there and then.

If you're uncertain then just don't check it to see if it's available, anywhere.

So it is true that there is not even one major registrar that allows you to check the availability of a domain without being sniff or taste? I will definitely take some of the advice that people suggested in this thread such as making a list and check the availability of the domain only when I'm about to buy it right there and then. Otherwise there is a chance that a domain taster will register my domain of interest to see if there is traffic or not. If there is traffic they are likely to keep it. If there is no traffic then they will most likely drop it within 5 days and this only cost them $0.25 for each name. I will definitely keep this in mind.

I've never had NameCheap, GoDaddy, or eNom "steal" any domains from me in this way. I can't comment on Moniker, as I've never used them. But I can agree with what everyone else here is saying - if you found a domain you wanted, and it was available, why didn't you register it right then? In my opinion, that is the real problem.
