Zip code finder has an OVT of about 38k. I was surprised to find a non TM name still available with that kind of OVT.

Remembering that MOBI is for cellphones I just registered AREACODEFINDER.MOBI right after my zipcode registrations. People will probably look up area codes more than zip codes on their phones. I'm sure people will want to lookup where they are getting calls from on their phone by the area code.

sounds like a good name to me, since i am a newbie can you explain what the ovt means and also, are you concerned about the keystrokes required to enter this name which would be 56 ?

am i correct in thinking that ANY domain can appear on a mobile phone if it's formatted properly ?

if so whats the big deal about .mobi why get dogfood.mobi when you have dogfood.net or ???

what's the advantage ??

OVT means Overture. Overture numbers represent how many times a word or a phrase was searched durring a month. Local radio stations was searched 38 thousand times last month.

I'm not concerned with keystrokes because there are many qwerty phones out or semi qwerty phones that eliminate the keystroke problem. If a user wants to search for something on the net through their phone I doubt keystrokes will stop them from trying to find it.

You are correct that any domain can fit on a mobile phone if formatted properly. But why don't we see a whole web full of mobile sites? We don't. Many people and companies had their chance at designing websites with the already existing extensions but 99% of them didn't bother with it. The few that did just made smaller versions of their main websites.

That is a huge turn off for someone using a phone tryingt to access the net. You can't just go on your phone and type in a website and add a .com to it and hope you will land on a site. Most of the time you will have an error, have a page that doesn't load, or see a page that is so mishapen. People don't want to deal with that.

With .mobi all a person has to know is that when they type in what they are looking for and add a .mobi as the extension they are assured a loading page with content immediately.

It sounds too simple but that's really it. For instance I showed my friend who never heard of .mobi one of my mobi websites last week. I told him to visit hdmovies.mobi. It loaded for him within 3 seconds and he literally said to me "wow, your site looks great. I can't believe how fast it loaded. every other .com I visiting had problems".

From hearing something like that from someone who isn't really tech savvy but wants access to the net from their mobile phone it sounded great.

so here is my take: a .mobi extension gives the user _confidence_ that the website on the other end will be usable and workable since it will conform to guidelines that will make it look good on his phone BUT other than that a .mobi site and .ru and .org site etc etc all can appear on mobiles and look equally good

i _assume_ that anyone could develop any site with any .tld extension specifically for mobile phones if they wanted to ... .mobi _must_ follow certain design conventions but that doesn't mean that other sites couldn't follow them if they wanted to ...

i have a site idea where the .mobi extension is taken but it is a site idea that is tailored to mobile phone use so i assume i can develop my own non-mobi extension and work to build the traffic and trust with end-users

final question, what is the revenue model that most people are working on ? ppc, sponsors etc, there is not a lot of room on that little screen ... i _assume_ that it would be some kind of ppc/affiliate scheme

actual final question ...... are you certain that type-in length issues aren't a problem, do mobiles (i haven't had one for several years as i am retired) have bookmarking, i assume they do
