In order for this new TLD to survive and flourish, I suggest it be shortened to .mob as soon as humanly possible. Less to type. A one-sylablle name. Even the subtle reference to the Godfather would only help the brand recognition/penetration of this tld imho. What do y'all think?

I was reading this other interesting thread Putting An End to the "Why Not Just Use a Com instead of Mobi Debate" here in the Dot MOBI forum and it prompted this semi-serious thought, especially since I just registered my first .mobi last week.

But I didn't want to hijack the thread over there...

because i think for multiple reasons the length does not and will not matter now and in the future. besides .mobi has a cool, web 2.0 ring to it

if only namepros.com were namepro.com - they would be so much more successful and traffic would be significantly higher with the shorter name - see what i mean? (although i'm sure they do wish they owned it for the redirects)

I think mobi is hip and catchy, if they were going for short .m would have been the way to go, if they could have got away with that.

I can agree with you, which is why I gave in and reg'd my first mobi last week ... but it just seems to me that the future of the web will be more and more splintered if there is no restriction or at least some more forethought on the # of char in a TLD, just IMO. To me, the 3 char of com, net, org just begs for an additional mob.

Thanks for your thoughts on it & voting the poll at the top :)

would it even be technically possible for icann or som reg authority to allow a change all TLDS at once? Meaning everyone's dot mobi gets replaced with a dot mob i.e. if you have bank.mobi you now have bank.mob

the more i think about it, the more i believe that the mobi founders (nokia, samsung, google etc) are going to absolutely have to implement mobi defaulting on the browsers

if they don't do this , they will be selling out the whole idea and leaving a lot of their supporters in the lurch

as far as i'm concerned, if you have a nokia phone, you will only need to launch your web browser, go to the address bar and type in one word such as hamburger .. and you will be taken to hamburger.mobi, period

there will be no need to type in m-o-b-i after hamburger

otherwise, these major backers have wasted a hell of lot of time and money

the browsers will default to mobi because they have to in order to make mobi work

I have to disagree with you on that. Although I would love to have MOBI be the default on Mobile browsers, it isn't essential to the success of mobi. It would speed up the success of mobi but it is not vital to it taking off.

If you have to type in the browser extension on the phone in case it doesn't default to anything, .com will still have messed up pages and .mobi will not. It's as simple as that. Once there is content on .mobi and people know that it will work over .com on cell phones then people will start typing in .mobi over .com.

My friends type in .mobi on their cellphones all the time because I just showed them one website I made with the .mobi extension. I don't talk to them about domaining, all I said was, "visit this mobile website I made for cellphones" some responded with "wow, the page loads pretty fast, what's .mobi?" I tell them "it's the .com equivilant for cell phones." and now they usually just look around typing in words and .mobi after them to see what comes up on their phones.

The most important perspective to this issue is branding. What an important difference an "i" can make.

"mobi" sounds more femine, more soft and nice than dry "mob" , when you say "mobi" it sounds like something you like. when you say "mob" its sound something you would hate. i definetly thing mobi should be mobi :)
