I can definitely see a need for websites tweaked specifically for mobile devices. I hope it is managed well. I wonder how strongly they will enforce the compatibility requirement.

I don't think we need more extensions, IMHO. Besides, .MOBI doesn't sound too attractive and suited, I don't think .

It’s a rather cumbersome extension but it can claim exclusivity in that all the content will be designed specifically for mobile devices so it is almost certain to find its niche.

Yah but, no one really gets much love out side of the big three exts anyway...

I don't understand why all of these new extensions are coming out and ruining the market for the current extensions.

I mean soon there is going to be an extension for every activity on the earth and then people are going to go nuts figuring out what extension is the correct one for this domain considering you have 100+ to choose from.

Search engines will become a major part in helping this I suppose but all this is not needed! IMO!

.mobi was approved by ICANN late last year after being the "working ext" for about a year during the application process. It was sponsored and will be managed by some heavy hitters, including Nokia and Microsoft. I started regging .com and .net names w/ "mobi" base terms about a year and a half ago, speculating that .mobi would a) be approved and that b)it would be the actual ext that was used. (There was some speculation that .mbl, for instance, might be the ext used, if ICANN, did indeed, approve the new gtld).

There has been some previous discussion about this at the forum, but not alot, and I appreciate the fresh news and the update.

It is obvious that computing and the internet has a large road show. An office is no longer confined to rooms inside of a building and telephones are performing services that were barely dreamed of a couple of decades ago, when they first lost their hardwired status. Whether or not a discreet gtld is actually needed and how the quality of the aesthetics of the actual ext are viewed, is up for debate. However with players like Microsoft behind it, it won't be lacking in promotion and visability outside the domain name marketing world, as has been the case w/ some of the other tld's/cctld's such as .info, .biz and .us. :imho:

.mobi, .coop, .aero, .museum, .jobs - useless TLD's, seriously useless and limited. How many Museums in the world are there? Couldn't they use .org or .edu?

.com(coop and aero can fit here), .net(intent of mobi can fit here),. org (.museum can fit here).....

ccTLd's have their place, no way around that. I am a huge fan of .tv...

Some other useful TLD's are .pro, .edu, .xxx - not limited, open ended TLD's. I hate the porn industry but it would be nice to have the Porn seperated so parents have a fair chance at defending their children from ONLY THE CONTENT THEY WANT. Not some stupid porn junk because you mistyped Disney. Does not interfere with anyone's freedom, you simply type imaperv.xxx instead of .com.

I guess this is an ever evolving process. We'll have to sit patiently by and see what becomes of all of this. I think one thing needs to be done for sure. If a TLD is restricted or is only supposed to be used for commercial if it's .com then we should regulate it as such. Then the other TLD's make more sense but in it's current structure every one uses .com for everything. .Net should be infrastructure, ISP's etc. If they are regulated and demanded to adhere to the standards set before them, then we can create hundreds for TLD's for all kinds of purposes and they might all make some sense. Maybe then .mobi would have some real value.

I don't mind the reason for it, but I still think the 4 letter extension is awful for cellular phones if you don't have a blackberry with a full keyboard. With a standard phone keyboard, I have to press "6,pause,6,6,2,2,4,4,4" just to enter "mobi" on a 10 key phone pad. a better tld for a cell phone would be something that could be typed with only 2 or 3 keystrokes such as .pd (Portable Device) that could be enter as "7,3" or maybe .pdw (Portable Device Website) as "7,3,9",

I know some kids are pretty quick at typing text on a 10 button keypad, but some of us old dogs don't want to learn new tricks. Disregard this rant if you have a blackberry device with a full keypad or think evenyone will have one soon.

I think the fast and furious pace ICANN is rolling out new specialized extensions is tremendous for the older .INFO and .BIZ namespace. It mass conditions people to the fact that there are more appropriate extensions outside of .COM.

The .MOBI extension will be backed by Nokia and Microsoft, so it is expected that mass publicity/visibility will be EXTREMELY high for this extension.
