MLB pays $1.2 million for Rockies.com

Until now the website Rockies.com had been owned by something called Tourism Canadian Rockies and was used to promote the Rocky Mountains, but Josh Leventhal of Baseball America reports that MLB has purchased the domain name for $1.2 million.

According to Venture Capital Group it’s the largest price ever paid for a sports-related website and a significantly higher price than the domain name was expected to generate via auction.

Leventhal notes that MLB now owns 26 of the 30 “dot-com” domain names for teams, with the Rays, Rangers, Twins, and Giants the holdouts. Giants.com is owned by the NFL team, while the other three are owned by non-baseball companies that apparently don’t want to sell.

Now if MLB would wake up and realize MLB.tv places our "national past-time" in the domain of Tuvalu, then they would show they really belong to the USA.

Despite all "dot-com" domain names owned by MLB, the most puzzling and insulting to me is MLB.tv. How stupid. How absolutely stupid.

Maybe MLB wants to sell beach trinkets as well as baseball.

What? Dot-tv stand for "television?" No, it doesn't.

Like say, the cable network that Al Gore just sold....Current.tv

Then look on tv, in newspapers, magazines and on the net...

.tv is used by a heck of a lot of companies.

As in .tv.,...people as a rule would not know or care that it is tuvalu///
They believe it is tv as in television.

So MLB.tv is not stupid, but makes damn good business sense.

Why do you attack and offend other users? You said 4 times the same thing "companies are already using .tv ".

The point is, .tv brand is so powerful that people forgot (and even don't know, probably because of lack of knoledge) .TV is a ccTLD in the first place. This doesn't matter already, they have accepted the brand.

1.2 million? Makes me wonder what chill.com costs. I guess the MLB with there no salary caps can afford only 1.2 million.
