Microsoft Argo's Final Name: The Zune?
Our inboxes are on fire with brand new information about the new Microsoft MP3 player. We thought the player was code-named "Argo", but we now got word that the final product name that's been flying around is the "Zune"!

The pic on the right seems to be the final design, which makes the player very cleanβ€”a definite departure from Microsoft's other endeavors. You all remember the video Microsoft's own people made to illustrate their packaging shortcomings? Well, it seems like they haven't learned much, as our tipster tells us the packaging itself is pretty ugly.

More info after the jump!

Our mole also says there's no game menu to be seen on the device, putting those rumors of portable gaming from Xbox branding in possible jeopardy. More game options possibly coming in the 2nd iteration.

There's also mention of a black version of the Zune, being shown on a music video for the band CSS, and the brown version on the cover for "Band of Horses". You can display Album covers for the song you're listening to on the screen, which is "big enough" and looks "pretty good". Paul Oakenfold also has a tie-in deal.

From the looks of things, the Zune will definitely be ready for a Xmas release.

We'll have more information plus possibly the logo and/or UI Shots tomorrow. Stay tuned! – Jason Chen

Thanks Tipster!

Yes, I registered ZunePro.com just in case they make a Pro version. :)

Excellent point Vince, as Microsoft loves to tag their software products with that stamp. I could see a Zune Pro in the future.

Interesting to note:
After rumors on several websites and blogs, today EMI the worlds third largest music company confirmed that they have inked a deal with the Redmond company to provide preloaded music videos for the Zune.

Best wishes,
Kimmy

Assuming that we doing a little Zune, show and tell, here, (I'll can erase myself, if my assumption is incorrect hehe.) In lieu of my 2 favs being regged before I caught onto this thread, (and not wanting to feel left out), these are my entries:
Zuniacs Com
Zuniac Com

(My favs in this genre- made-ups- were Zunatic and Zunatics.)

Yeah, I’ love’em!

What a great name for a forum full of Zuniacs. They also lessen any possible legal issues (not that I’m saying there would be anyway) because they don’t incorporate the full mark of Zune.

With the way this thread has gone I wouldn’t be too surprised if –RJ- didn’t buy Zuniacs.com from you and use it to branch this thread off into its own separate forum.

Best wishes,
Kimmy

Heck, if -RJ- wants Zuniacs com to develop something with, he can have it, gratis- I'm easy. (Of course I would keep Zuniac Com for any overflow that might occur but, hey, I never said that I was perfect. Easy? Yes. Perfect or cheap? No. :hehe:

Microsoft sues cyber-squatters
By Josephine Moulds

(Filed: 23/08/2006)

Microsoft has launched a new offensive against people registering internet domain names that contain the company's trademarked terms.

It has sued more than 200 of these so-called "cyber-squatters" or "typo-squatters" who use web addresses containing terms like Microsoft or slight misspellings of them.

Professional domain operations buy these sites, with names like microsoftrebate.com or xbox360com.com, and put pay-per-click advertisements on them.

Microsoft said more than 2,000 domains that contain Microsoft trademark terms are being registered each day.

Aaron Kornblum, the company's internet safety enforcement attorney, said: "Microsoft has witnessed a virtual land rush for Internet domain names with the goal of driving traffic for profit. "

The company claims these sites create "potential confusion for visitors to Microsoft's legitimate Web sites and illegal profiteering through the misuse of Microsoft's intellectual property".

Microsoft sued 217 unnamed defendants and is taking action to learn their identities. Separately it has filed two civil lawsuits against a total of four people allegedly profiting from domain names that infringe on Microsoft trademarks.

The litigation stems from a 1999 law called the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which imposes a fine of up to $100,000 on anyone who, "registers, traffics in or uses a domain name that is identical to, confusingly similar or dilutive of" an existing trademark with a bad-faith intent to profit.

Microsoft noticed the surge in sites earlier this year during efforts to monitor "phishing" sites, which mimic bank and other corporate sites in an attempt to steal user identities.

Anybody get a C&D letter yet ?

Microsoft on Tuesday launched a new offensive against cybersquatters who allegedly gain illegal profits from thousands of Web sites, such as WindowsLiveTutorial.com and HaloChamp.com, that include the company's trademarked names.

Curious if anyone has registered the other rumored offspring, Pyxis...?
Hopefully as others on name pros have warned, anyone with a ZuneXYZ will be likely sued. I find this hard to believe though as ipod is an example of the many sites that while may be capitalizing on the ipod, are in fact promoting at the same time. I wonder if most who have the Zune/Zune-like names are holding on to them...just in case.

Thanks,

SirenGirl
